Best free online forum software?

I was planning to create a forum, primarily consisting of news, my country's current affairs, politics and all that stuff.

Since I'm starting this alone, and I can't vouch for the response (I'm not interested in making money from this, but at the same time I don't wish to end up emptying my pockets!) I didn't want to invest in stuff like software, server hosting etc so I had been looking for freebie stuff.

The problem is that I know tons of freebie sites ready to host a forum like this, but it would be quite taxing to test their functioning one by one plus it wouldn't seem professional if I keep changing the discussions from one forum to another either...

My first preference was vbulletin but apparently one has to pay for it now? I was sure that it was free some time ago? Correct me if I'm mistaken...

Anyway please post any suggestions you might be having for my idea. I'm much grateful!

It's that I didn't get a good impression considering that I registered with only that forum because it appeared good, and 30 minutes have passed and I didn't as yet receive a confirmation email? (Checked spam and junk as well, using isp mail) :ohwell:

are you sure a forum is right? based on your first line you are probably better off with a blog?

you could use IPB free... IPB is the next best thing.. to.. if not better then Vbulletin

Yes I was thinking about it.

A blog would be better, then if I get frequent feedback from the same persons I will consider a forum later.
I fear a forum would go out of control if I just start it, alone... and on the topic of politics right now! :laugh:

So now I've got another decision to make - which blog site to choose...

I've never blogged and for heaven's sake there are thousands! :twitch:
