people here are talking about hardware, which im sure is what this is mostly directed at.
However, more than my 24 inch monitor, my e8500, my beautiful e6750 was quite amazing also, my lycosa keyboard, lachesis mouse, 8800GTS512, 9800GX2, 7900GS, etc....
but how about warcract III? paid $90 for it and the expansion together, lasted me 6 years and running. Counterstrike? $20, 4 years, half life 2 4 years, $40, etc....

yeah, I just hate guys who seem like they are already pointed at your head before they even see you. Getting increasingly common.

I am gonna guess that keyboard and mice are basically the best purchase anyone has made because they rarely get worn out, and last for years.

Longest running Computer item has been my floppy copy of Doom(original) and Doom 2. It's outlasted five computers.

Side note my original Nintendo NES still works! It has to be the longest running gaming hardware for me! Love me some Super Mario or Zelda/Link. :D

I'd have to say my 1995 Packard Bell with a Pentium 1 and an ungodly small amount of ram  Was where i got my roots for pc gaming with Doom. I was a small lad back then but it was the most amazing thing ever to me at the time. Has so many old school games and what not. Second would have to be my 37" Toshiba tube tv which still has an amazing picture, followed by my keyboard, which is about 11 years old

Best investment would probably be the 7800GT that i had for nearly 3 years, never missed a beat, ran voltmoded, more than 3 years and it is still going in the pc that i sold.

Also, good investements i would consider my soundcard and my monitor which i dont plan on changing.

Longest lasting purchase was back in 1994. It was a Super Nintendo Entertainment System. I got it for $200 bundled with Super Mario World, and it's still kickin'!

I still run my trusty old Samsung 80gb ide hard drive that stores all my music and pics, I've had this for about 5years. Pulled from my first pc and its still kicking.

I'm also pretty sure I will pop Oblivion in every rig I build from now til infinity..

My 15-odd yr old Sony 3.5" FDD is still fit as a horse (my longest-served piece of hardware). It descended from a "multimedia PC" we had in the '90s. I still use it when Windows XP setup asks for a RAID floppy.

I would have to say my 4870X2 will probably be with me for a while, But it's hard to say at the moment. But to date I think I've had my monitor the longest out of all my other Hardware. Samsung 216BW...However I was considering getting the ASUS 21.5 1080p
