Had to sell my gaming rig due to divorce and picked this up for $199 refurb. Has Core2Duo e8400 3.0 ghz, 8 gb ram and a R7 240 2GB card alone with a 800 power supply and 1 TB HDD . What would be my best option for a decent gpu untill i can upgrade the MB and CPU. It's not a mini case but more like a mid-tower. has 6+8 pin pci connectors from the PS. Any info would help. Thanks.

that'll depend on which case you have. the proper mid tower will take a full gtx 1080 ( there are several that only require a single 8pin connector.) the low profile mid tower an amd r7 240 is going to be as good as it gets. not many options for low profile cards.

Might help if you pick out the case you have...

the 750ti works fine in my nephews 7010 SFF, the game expectations are the other portion of the deciding equation after the space , and power considerations, along side budget. meaning if your going to play majong, or minesweeper, your needs are not as great as if you wanted to play skyrim, etc...

I am used to playing the best and newest games out. Here is a pic of the rig i had to sell. Was a AMD 8350, 8gb RipJawsX, ocz 250gb boot drive. 2 WD nas Reds 2 TB each. Gtx 680 ftw then switched to a MSI R9 290X.

The only reason i bought this rig was to have something to do i guess and it was cheap. Was supprised to see it play Far Cry 3,Crysis3, Dying Light and others with just that little R7 240. I do plan on changing just about everything i can on this rig, just a little at a time, so i can have a little money for the weekends lol. So am i right saying i can use a dual slot card atm?

you can stick whatever you want in the mini tower case. my 1080 rog strix uses 1 - 8pin and 1 - 6pin. just double check the mfg's site when picking out acard. they'll tell you what the power ports are.

I have the first one the Mini -Tower but i can get another case thats not a problem i have a spare NZXT Phantom 410 laying around.

Won't work without heavy modding. They were on BTX in those days. :(

Essentially you can upgrade the GPU and get a quad core, they seem to take everything. The q9xxx stuff is great, but expensive. As for the GPU ... I'd look for used cards, probably. GTX 760 or something. If new maybe RX 460 2GB, if you can get a decent price.

EDIT: In gaming clock speed is generallymore interesting than the number of cores, and I guess you have the e8400, which is a surprisingly decent chip. Too bad you can't overclock, and you can't change motherboards either. :(

I was thinking it had an ATX MOBO due to the 800watt PS. I guess i'll open her up and check it out, i do know it has 1 pci-e and 2 pci slots but that ain't saying much.

I can mod just about anything, lol Take a look at the pic of my old rig's PS COVER that was cut with a water jet . Also make alot of other mods that the average person wouldn't notice.

The OptiPlex towers are hard to fit dual slot cards in unless you cut/mod the case and bracket or can find a bracket with the right plugs in the right place (i just took it off my 5750 lol). Theres a pci-express adapter thing that apparently can work but idk... msi gtx 750ti would fit and be pretty decent. Cheap quad-cores like q8300-q9650 would be good as well. Maybe even a q6600, those are around 15 bucks and u can mod it easily to 3ghz with a sliver of painters tape.

Some people on youtube have crammed a 960/970 in these somehow lol. Its a tight squeeze also near the HSF. I chose to put 2 80mm fans on the back on top of the card, as the board layout in btx is literally upside down and backwards.

BTX is just about dimensions and positioning afaik, not about power. And honestly it's not really worth it to convert ATX/BTX, not for an old motherboard, and cases are cheap enough.

That is multi-quote twice and reply on the last. After that you add the quotes. You did what I call a triple lindy and you did fine one. :)

Look for the small EVGA GTX 1060 6GB SC with the single fan and find out which CPU's your MB supports. The GTX 960 or 950 short cards could also be an option.

If all else fails i will just throw everything into my old Phantom 410 case. I guess that would work wouldn't it? Or is the BTX mobo still gonna be a problem. I'm not worried about cutting up this old dell case one bit, just trying to save some work and energy. :)

To be honest the only Dell I worked on with that configuration for the CPU, I pulled all of the cooling out and replaced it with an after market CPU air cooler and another fan going out. Most those computers only had one fan for CPU cooling and I think the CPU cooler was passive.

If you have a drill, nuts and screws/bolts anything is possible and don't forget to ground. If the other case doesn't have all of the stand offs holes that you need rubber stands offs could also work.

Yea luckily i had an old 140mm fan i shoved in the front. These HSF's are pretty much a nightmare for dust and heat issues.

The top is ATX, bottom is BTX. You have to change quite a bit for it to work.
