best intel chip for the buck

hi, with intel bringing out it's clarkdale chip later this year (in theory), and intel dropping prices on some existing chips, what do the forum members think the best intel chips are for the buck? thanks for your views.

I wouldn't know, but I know the i7 920 is a great bang/buck if you would need that much power

It's 230$ at Microcenter... If you qualify for Retail Edge (Work at best buy or walmart or anything that sells comps), you can get it for 130$!!!

Go work at bestbuy for a week

What, no way. I wouldn't pay more than $150 for one. The online shops have been price gouging like crazy since it went eol. I hear that they haven't been clocking well and they run way hotter than their 45nm counterparts.

System that we've built at the shop consisting of intel procs have used the 5200 and 8400. I would honestly have to say the E5200 has some great bang for the buck. If you want to go even lower than that a dual Celey has some great overclocking potentional but the 512k L2 just kills it. My vote goes to the E5200.

It depends on what you need the CPU for. What do you need the CPU to do? Really, the 5200 will do anything relatively quickly, is priced right and is fairly overclockable.

I love that smiley, first of all. He never mentioned his price range, and it's really hard to reccomend an Intel processor other than the Q9550. All of the other "budget" and "midrange" quads and duals are just too expensive compared to an equivlent Phenom 2 or Athlon 2.
Edit: erocker is probably right with the e5200, other than that Intel's prices are not very competitve right now.

It really depends on what you're doing.

E5200 is cheap - really cheap... if you are making a budget gaming/htpc/office rig, get that.

The i7 920 is the best bang/buck processor overall - at $270 it shellacs, and I mean shellacs, all processors in the same price range. Which means it will last you longer than competing options.

they're basically a similar perf/$ as a i7 920 = about the performance of 4 E5200's

I dont know why I didn't suggest the e7k series. I think I found a new E7300 for $90 and they can clock to 4.0Ghz+. I remember when the e7200 first came out _JM had one clocked to 4.2GHz easy.

well yea i know although the 1.86ghz had 2mb cache aswell if im not mistaken and its just dumb marketing to give it the same name, although its "pentium" dual core as opposed to core 2 duo :ohwell:

maybe e5400 would have been more fitting ? or is the e5** 65nm ?

Completely agree here. The core i7 is the best price to performance chip on the planet, especially if you pick one up art MC when they are on sale. They smoke the best of the 775 45nm Quads, and they are cheaper than many of them. Now, if you are talking about the best budget chip, then yes the e5200 is probably it.

get it at less the half that... just work at about any store that has computer stuff in it for a week and sign up for retail edge... or AT LEAST get it from Microcenter... or buy it used

E5200 is 45nm, 800 MHz FSB, and 2 MB of L2 cache. It overclocks quite well (except for mine, since I got a C0 version which sucks

), and runs pretty much everything I throw at it.

if you talk about overclockable cpu there is q6600 and e8400 , but if want it now my advice forget it , cuz new cpu's have high VID and can't overclock much , there is option which is xeon x3220 it is same like q6600 but best overclocker cpu
