so i've been using the zalman 9700, is there anything better than that for intel processors?

the xigma 1283 is also good.

you can attach any 120mm fan to the TRUE120. reccomendations would depend on your noise preferences, and how you intend to power the fan (eg mobo header w/ temp control, seperate fan controller, etc)

Xigmatek is probably the best one out. Get the new 4 heat pipe one, cant think of the name off the top of my head. It has 4 8mm heatpipes whereas the S1283 just has 3 6mm heat pipes. the stock fan on it is good and quiet and exceptional cooling but them scythe fans Scrizz mentioned, yate loons, silverstones, antecs, etc can increase the cooling.

I'd agree this is a site worth visiting, I've looked myself for HSF comparisons. But what you tend to find is that the top ten are much the same, a degree or so here or there. If I were you I'd stick to your Zalman it's pretty good and hasn't been trumped by much by anything since really.

I wouldn't want to spend upto £30 on a new HSF to find out that I gained 1 degree extra cooling ability myself.

I am still using my trusty old freezer 7 pro with a 120mm fan on it.It has had my E6300 to 3.9ghz and my E6750 to 4ghz.I have never really seen the need for them massive coolers,but i guess its down to personal choice.

the bigger the heatsink, the less airflow you need. i go bigger heatsinks and slower fans, to reduce noise.

My 6750 is at 33c on windows at 3.2ghz@1.35vcore set in the bios,with just ie running.If i thought i needed a bigger cooler i would have got one,my temps have always been fine on this cooler.With the 120mm akasa amber on it it is no noisier than any other fan in my system as they are all 120mm ambers,apart from the 80mm amber which i have fitted to my vf900.

Only get the S1284 with a AMD cpu or it will perform worse than a S1283 on a Intel cpu and the retention bracket will not work with a S1284.

The Zalman 9700 is a good heatsink, I used it for a very long time. You will not notice a huge difference by upgrading, and IMO is it not worth the money to do so.

I have a hard time trusting that site. I find it hard to believe that the Ultra-120 outperforms the Ultra-120 Extreme. Something about that doesn't sit well with me.

the vendetta 2 is the xigamtek listed previously.

I use the Akasa Evo 120, I can't say it's the best and I've not found many sites that include it in it's tests to compare but it looks good on my ASUS P5E3 Deluxe and I get the option to replace the 120mm fan as it's standard size and fittings, so I've replaced it with a PWM case fan for quietness.

I like this option but it's all to their own really!

I have a hard time trusting that site. I find it hard to believe that the Ultra-120 outperforms the Ultra-120 Extreme. Something about that doesn't sit well with me.

From what I read, the reason they got better results from the 120 over the TRUE, is the base on the TRUE is not truly flat, but has a slight curve. I've read articles on numerous sites where they recommend lapping the TRUE for better performance.

Then again, I believe in always checking at least 3 or 4 reviews before coming to a conclusion. You never know if one reviewer got a bad sample.

And yes, I don't believe the gains you would get from replacing your 9700 would justify the cost. But that's just me.

yeah the true's did need lapping. the problem was actually the retention mechanism on early models, google and you'll find the 'penny' mod to push it on tighter.

later models fixed it, tbh the lapping didnt save that much. (the 'penny' mod took 5 C off my temps, the lapping an additional 2-3C at best)

What are you using to test temps.

My Tuniq is lapped and I have a high CFM fan, there should be no way you are getting that low.

I get 55c idle, upwards of 70c load.

They're not identical. The Vendetta 2 has a different fan and the fin design is slightly better than the S1283's. You might want a higher RPM fan with the Vendetta 2, because the one it comes with is very low RPM for silence. It's a little too low!

You may notice it looks similar to the Core Contact Freezer. I think Ice Hammer designed Sunbeam and SilenX's coolers.

I second that. My 9700 Lapped is cooling my Q6600 and im rock stable at 3.5GHz.You should be doing great with your dual core, since my Quad puts out alot more heat.
