ill still take a samsung F3 blacks dont beat the F3s they tend to come out equal and WD tends to charge a $20 premium over the F3 at this point the F3 for $55 on newegg Western digital drives really just dont stand a chance.

i did have a Maxtor Atlas 15K II 73GB, but with a LSI Logic U320 controller for some reason i had problems installing Windows 7... it would get close to finishing, but for some reason with the EVGA nForce 730a motherboard i use it just won't finish...

anyways this is for video editing, encoding/processing from AVCHD (1080p30) to DVD and eventually Blu-Ray

i could only get ~85MB/sec because of the 32-bit PCI bus @ 33MHz, would have been nice to figure out how to get the 32-bit PCI bus to run @ 66MHz with the controller, but that's all she could do...

the drive can sustain 98M/sec on the wider and or faster 64-bit bus (probably)

Best of the best? HDDs? No such thing. They're all POS in some way. WD may have access time, but it has truly asinine amounts of noise. The blue and blacks this gen are almost as bad as the raptors. You have to set them in quiet mode to get Samsung noise levels, and that drops their access time to 17-18ms! Way worse than Samsung for the same performance.

Samsung has speed and is dead silent, but has absolute shit reliability. I had to ditch my F3 and F4 due to insane amounts of errors despite firmware upgrades.

Seagate has pretty much nothing going for it right now. Worst access time and noise just as bad as WD.

You want a decent drive? Either go back to the dual platter 640 blues from WD (decent access time, reliable, and quiet) or wait for the new 1 TB per platter drives from WD and Seagate. The mergers both companies have gone through should hopefully produce decent drives. Though I have zero hope for WD. Hitachi drives are noisy as hell too. Seagate will hopefully take Samsung's speed and noise level and add reliability.

I suspect the next drive worth buying will be a Seagate/Samsung 3 platter 3 TB drive. Hopefully they show up soon.

Ugh it's a pain to have one in a desktop machine, you really need to provide good cooling for it and I mean VERY good.
Here is a quick run I did with HD tune for my drive if anyone is interested, I could run a few tests on my server with 3 10k drives in RAID 0 as well.

Don't mind the cache, I didn't leave it running since it's rather pointless.

On topic: I think the F3 is perfectly fine compared to WD Black series. It's maybe a few MB/s slower but it's also cheaper

This. Plus I'm unsure whether they've sorted out the RAID problems on the WD's yet.
I've got experience with the Samsung 1TB F3 HD103SJ and the WD Caviar Black 1TB's and there's bugger all difference. I'd rather pay less for the Sammy with 3 year Warranty than the WDCB with 5 year Warranty.

And that's saying something, as I'm VERY warranty orientated.
