Best sound card for $100 or less?

What Sound Card should I get ? I've been looking on newegg and the all seem so good I can't choose.

i had the ht omega striker. great card. i luckily got it on sale for $75 shipped on newegg. it might have all that x-fi jazz, but it definitely gets the job done. i stopped buying creative ever since their vista drivers fiasco.

Depending on what slots you have available on your board and what your intended usage will be....my money went with the ASUS Xonar D1 192Hz card.

I know you're using it for gaming, but I don't know whether or not you'll be using it with only a headset OR SPDIF type connection. If you're only going to be using it with a headset then the ASUS is an easy shoe in for my first pick.

If you're using a SPDIF connection and a headset then you may have a problem as it uses the same port for the mic as it does for the SPDIF connector...meaning you can only use 1 of the 2 at a time. It's not a big deal for me as I don't really use my mic which means I can be lazy and not have to unplug the connector from mic to sp.

It's not a big deal really as you could just unplug the mic and plug in the sp connector or vice versa. You just can't use both at the same time if that matters at all to you. I use mine for not only games, but music and home theater (full 650W home theater system).

I've had mine for a while now (don't remember when, but it's been a while) and have had absolutely 0 problems with it using it in Vista or Windows 7 64Bit. The ASUS website actually has drivers for Windows 7 so you can see support is not lacking.

I don't use a Head Set. I have each of my speakers plug in directly. My Front Plug in My rear plug in my Center and Bass Plug in and my my Side Plug in. Does that change anything? I hear that X fi is working ok for people on Windows 7. It seems to offer more features for gaming enhancements.

while running vista it really doesn't make a big difference which one you get because Vista only uses software to make sound

Thank god thet you did not buy one of those PCI X-Fi, you will get really pissed off by the drivers.

Not if you know how to set up your players correctly. (ASIO)
Btw this is what OpenAL is for in games.

Win 7 works exactly the same way as Win Vista 95% of the time.
