As title states, which is the best way for my fans to blow? Pulling air through the heatsinks, or pushing air through? Also, the rear case fan, push air out, or pull air in? Anything else I am not thinking of, would be appreciated. Thanks guys

Depends on the case, but generally front fans are intake, rear fans are exhaust, blowholes are exhaust, and most heatsink fans blow air into the heatsink.

u need to move air thru the case.. one big slow running fan at the front one at the back does the job.. its common to blow in at the front and out at the back..

a million fans all working against each other does bugger all except make noise..

Like everyone else has already mentioned in through the front and out the back.
What I try to do is visualize the air moving through my case, the more bends and things in its way the worse its gonna be. Try to keep air moving as straight as possible.

EDIT:
Push or Pulling through the heatsinks is funny (like ktr says try both) but if the lower (near mobo air is warm like near the CPU)its probably better to blow air into the heatsink. But better yet is a taller heatsink that blows air across the mobo and out the back

I would play with both setups and see which gets you the lower temps.

I noted placing one fan inside the case parallel to one front-in in a distance of 10-15cm (as hot air moves up primarily the bottom intake, also both fans should be the same potence or almost the same) helps a lot for making better the airflow from in to out, i test it on air and now on water, in both cases helped to cool the motherboard, nb and sb, video card and of course the CPU (i'm on water but i need good airflow as i placed the radiator with a push-pull configuration on the rear of the case).

I know this is not a fair and not clean solution at all ... but since i'm a little bit clumsy i'm still thinking how to mod my Armor Jr well to make this possible and permanent. Also a side-intake would help for conducting well the air to the rear of the case.

While we are on the topic, does taking off the side panel mess up airflow in the case? I always assumed it was better because of all the air coming in, but techincally its not directional and not really cool either. So does it actually hurt performance taking off the side of the case?

the idea is to get the case at as near room ambient as u reasonably can..

unless u have a big fan in the case side opening it all up to the room helps.. i have a case side fan just to blow room temp air in the general direction of the grafix cards..

room ambient is the base line.. u cannot get cooler than that..

YES!...lol, depends. In my latest mod the temps rise a bit when the side panel is off. I designed the comp to have specific airflow patterns and taking the side off messes them up.

To me fans that blow at the mobo(cpu coolers, chipset coolers and side panel mounted fans) disturb proper airflow.

that is not to say in EVERY case that is so, but I design my cases around air flowing a certain way instead of the general "universal" way of just throwing fans where the holes are.

I really don't know how it is for other people, but I get cooler temps with the side off, but that could also be that my case does have a spot for a front fan.

I have been considering removing everything, and either cutting out a hole, or at least drilling some holes for a front fan.

You posted while I was writing my reply, MKmods!!
My case really doesn't have proper airflow, my CPU fan is pushing air through the heatsink, and my idle temps are = core1 43°C, core2 38°C.

LOL, that happens a lot to me too..
if you look at the comp in my sig I get at least 10C lower than you using a much hotter x2 6400 (125 watts) and a 8800GT.

If I was using the 65watt Intel stuff the temps would be quite a bit lower.

Yeah, I figured I was running a little warm. It isn't even summer yet. Can't wait to see what temps would be like then. But hopefully I will get my new board and case by then. Any ideas on keeping cool in the meantime?

this air cooling thing has to be split into to two parts.. there are individual components that need cooling.. the basic ones are cpu and gpu.. these get air blown at em directly.. but the air they use needs to be as near room ambient as possible..

hence the need for case cooling.. as cool as possible is room ambient.. if the air being used by the component fans is 10 C hotter than room temps the components are 10 C hotter for being in the case..

this gets complicated when case fans (my side fan for example) get used as a direct component cooling fan.. its not really a case fan in this instance..

but one simple test is to put your hand near one of the case exhaust fans.. if the air coming out of the case feels warm your case internal temps are too hot..

it must be a true a case exhaust fan.. not the psu one or the grafix card one..

blowing room ambient air on your hand feels cool.. if the air coming out of your case feels warm it could be cooled better..

The Vid card is about to be replaced, and the cooling isn't working very well on it, as you will understand by the picture. But, hey, gotta do what you gotta do, fortunately, I bought it with that setup. So I feel better about myself. I had just taken out the rear fan. It was getting a little noisy, I am replacing it in a couple of hours.

Thats an interesting aspect that I haven't thought about before. It never even crossed my mind if the exhaust fan is blowing out hot air it needs to be cooler. I always just assumed it was doing its job. I will definitely keep that thought into consideration when trying different airflow options in my antec 900 here in a few days. :)

that pic is a case cooling disaster.. leave the side off..

and just to add.. there are three fans that exhaust case air out of the rear of my case..

one is the power supply fan.. warm air comes out.. perfectly normal.. its psu heat.. not case heat..

two is the grafix card fan.. warm or hotish air comes out.. again perfectly normal its grafix card heat not case heat..

three is the big case fan.. cool near room ambient air comes out.. as it should be.. no problems..

I can tell that case has seen a lot of hours by the amount of dust build up, especially on the fan. Definitely put that rear exhaust fan back in though, one of the most important IMO. I also bet you are one of the people that would benefit from the side being off!

First there is no reason EVER to feel bad or have to explain why ur case is not as good as a $200 Lian li or my mods.
(I REALLY hate when people with tons of $$ try to make others feel bad because they cant have the same stuff)

No done ranting and back to your case.

First thing is the CPU cooler, this is way better
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186134
(airflow can be directed towards the exhaust fan, thats missing)lol

Next, the missing exhaust fan, see the holes. Even if you had a fan there they would block about 50% of the air. You need to cut them out first like this

Buy a pair of tin snips (about $10) draw a circle around a fan grill and cut out the center

Now without major reconstruction adding a fan to the front is out of the question so i would leave the side off.(or add a couple fans to it)

I don't know why, but if I remove my side panel my CPU temp goes up with 5 degrees (verified both by Speedfan and Asus utility). I wonder if it's because the case fan on the side panel is blowing air directly on to the large cooler.. Does anyone know like "why" this is??

Question: Where are the front fans in that case? Doesn't the temps go rather high without atleast 1 exhaust fan???

I don't know why, but if I remove my side panel my CPU temp goes up with 5 degrees (verified both by Speedfan and Asus utility). I wonder if it's because the case fan on the side panel is blowing air directly on to the large cooler.. Does anyone know like "why" this is??

Put a pict of you side view

I reinstalled the rear fan. It was only out for about 30 minutes. I know about the dust buildup. Believe it or not, I clean my case monthly. It is just this building. Built in 1812, it generates a lot of dust.

My case wasn't so much of a nightmare until I got the new power supply. Man, it has a cable for EVERYTHING and the kitchen sink. I had to cram them all in behind the dvd drives just to try to get a little better airflow in there. I flipped the fan on the cpu around to pull air through, and dropped about 8°C. Not sure if it was the direction change, or the fact of cleaning the dust, or both. But it sure helped.

I should be picking up a new case, (not sure of brand) from someone on here within the next month or so. Full size atx. Screw these M-atx cases. Not enough room for anything.
