Update: LulzSec have released what they claim to be everything they took from Bethesda, including source code and admin passwords, except for the 200,000 user details which they say they’re leaving out because, “We actually like this company.” (They also claim to have broken into senate.gov, and paste this as proof. That should bring them some dark-glassed attention.)

LulzSec, who have claimed responsibility for many of the gaming hacks of late, have announced they’ve had access to Bethesda/Zenimax’s data for a couple of months, and are planning on releasing details today. They’ve been winding up BethSoft all day, threatening to release details of a number of games, including Brink. However, in their usual way, they are suggesting they’ll go easy on them because “we love Call of Cthulhu.” They rather spuriously suggest this is motivated by a lack of details on Skyrim, but even if they received some, plan “to embarrass you anyway.”

As usual LulzSec’s Twitter feed is a mixture of taunting boasts and in-fighting with others in the community, but in the mix is the claim that they currently have over 200,000 users’ details. That’s the bit they suggest they might not leak because of the power of 2005′s Cthulhu game, co-published by Bethesda.

But for some reason the focus of their attack seems to be Brink. Yesterday they warned, “Say your prayers, Brink users.” Seemingly in response to protests from others who pointed out that there’s little argument for their being victims they explained, “If you want ethics, go cry to #Anonymous,” indicating their anarchic motivations are far less politically or socially driven than the Fawkesian crowd. “We did it because they couldn’t stop us,” is the reasoning.

They explain that they’ve had access to the Bethesda data for a couple of months, but seem to be waiting for a couple more details before they release it all. And then comes the threat just a few minutes ago that if Bethesda gives “everyone more info on Skyrim and we’ll keep the user database to ourselves. However we are going to embarrass you anyway. :D” Then they push their teasing one step further suggesting, “Bethesda, add an official LulzSec top hat to Skyrim and we’ll remove your admin configurations from our incoming leak. Deal?”

It’s clearly an extremely unpleasant experience for those at Bethesda, and it’s a demonstration of what is behind these hacks: the lulz. Those trying to fathom a pattern, or guess what form of revenge or injustice is behind their motivations needs to understand that no such thing is relevant. It’s not even because it’s found to be funny, nor to prove hacking prowess (although that’s clearly a factor along the way). It’s because they can. Thus, lulz.

Source

Does this mean we will get an early Skyrim leak? Perhaps we were anyways (Unrelated to this).

LulzSec also has brought down 4Chan this afternoon. It seems LulzSec & Anonymous are having a little war ATM. Let me see if I can find a source...

If I had to guess I'd say they're on the verge of being arrested. There's probably a lot of both government and freelance factions closing in. They present an appealing target for both white and black hats.

Agreed 110%...These guys truly have some balls. They even set up a hotline to take hacking requests, thats pretty damn gutsy.

I think its funny, from my experiences most company's and corporations like have very minimal security unless there dealing directly with money in which case most of there software and systems are outsourced.

I have always been careful what i put my information into like for games and stuff i use a different email@ and phony addresses and Phone #'s Bethesda is never going to send me something so why do they need to know.
Also using Paypal for everything possible keeps my cc number and details from floating around.

My point is ppl need to take there privacy and security online as seriously as you do in real life, you can get robbed on the internet just as easily as the ghettos here in baltimore.

There's a bit of schadenfreude in this.

I'd have to guess that lulzsec and anonymous are a lot like the other perceived threats of today: we all think it's a huge army of lunatics but it's actually a small group of professional asshats that inflict 99% of the damage.

It took the gubernment 10 years to find Osama and he was the highest priority target. These guys are behind seven proxies. :D

There doesn't seem to be any pattern or motivation for lulzsec other to prove they can do it. I mean what strategic value does hacking Bethesda have? If its from a lack of details on skyrim as they suggest they are fucking morons. Okay maybe if they hacked Activision it would be funny but its not really it seems kinda petty to me.

AT LEAST Anonymous have had some political motivation with "Operations" against Australian censorship as an example which i can sort of understand.

Lulzsec also took responsibility for the PSN outage.

Osama wasn't connected to the internet. He used physical proxies, arguably the best kind.

Nothing secure goes through cia.gov (would give away agents' identity easily) so, as they said, the CIA really doesn't care.

They better tread carefully though. I'm sure the CIA's website is being monitored by the NSA and the FBI was put on the trail. I give them a month before arrests are made.

Most proxy services will give up the identity (IP) of users when handed a warrant or a subpena. Once they find the ISP(s) where the attacks originated, then they have many ways to find out which IP address is actively being used to launch/monitor an attack. Another subpena/warrant and they have the name/address of who is currently claiming that IP. Another subpena/warrant at that address and you find the offending computers and a list of potential attackers.

Like I said above, I give it a month--maybe as little as a week depending on how much they care.

You know we're fucked when the only thing that seems to be able to fuck with these guys is 4chan. LulzSec is gonna piss off somebody who they shouldn't have eventually. If I had the know-how, I'd be fucking their shit up myself. Seriously, fuck these guys.

Wow. Lots of hackers lately taking down everything they can just because. I'm kind of worried for the future! There needs to be some kind of hack proof system..or something to make it more difficult

I wish they would go after Atari for making such shit as TDU.

But in all honesty they are doing what needs be done. The public has paid for th internet, pays for the bandwidth to download, pays for expansion, pays for the use of and these large companies have the equivalent of a gaping hole in the side of a bank and want us to give them our money and info. The companies like Sony who charge out the ass and cry when users actually use the products they bought at the specified or above level, but do little to secure our information.

In every other industry if you make a car that causes users to be in harms way you get sued, if you make a drug that is harmful you get sued, if you make something that is knowingly broken you get sued. Why do these companies think they can come to our play ground and change the rules? Do they not lock their doors? Do they not believe in security? Yes they do, until it comes to users information. Then its whatever is cheapest and easiest.

Fuck the companies, if they cared to do what was right by users they wouldn't be the target.

you have every right to sue a corporation for what you believe is wrong doing on their part. doesn't matter what industry they are a part of. if you believe you are paying for an online service that is not protecting your information adequately then hire a lawyer, build a case and sue. that is your right in the USA.

well, they act like they are sophisticated hackers when in reality they rely on cheap phishing techniques to gain access to computers on the network they want to attack. while it is a valuable lesson for companies to keep reminding their employees not to be retarded, their tactics still wreak of dishonesty. but then again, knowing that they are nerds with little life responsibility, i guess i would rather they do it than terrorists with nukes.

So when Atari released a game TDU that was unplayable for thousands and when threads on their own forums about class action lawsuits came up the simply banned the members its OK?

And when laws require a certain number of members to sue to get legal remedy to their problems by the laws passed with the help of large companies...........

But hey, it was only $40, times thousands. But getting thousands of people together across states, and tens of thousands across countries. Sure.

This is the problem, when large companies shit on users, and leave it up to their paid system to sort it out we end up with "Ford Pinto" like decisions about users. Fuck them, they will only burn to death. But hey, whats a few million dollars among friends at the big business level?

Well, I guess the next time Atari makes a game, TDU will be remembered and no one will buy it. Here's where Piracy is handy, as people test products before buying!

of course not. but you know there is always two sides to every story. regardless, being banned from a forum doesnt mean you cant organize a lawsuit.

And when laws require a certain number of members to sue to get legal remedy to their problems by the laws passed with the help of large companies...........

you don't have to file a class action suit. you can file an individual one.

If these ppl where smarter they would expose the vulnerability's to the company's and get themselves well paying jobs instead of jail time.

Once they find the ISP(s) where the attacks originated, then they have many ways to find out which IP address is actively being used to launch/monitor an attack. Another subpena/warrant and they have the name/address of who is currently claiming that IP. Another subpena/warrant at that address and you find the offending computers and a list of potential attackers.
. . .
It's more of a joke than a literal expression. Anyone who is sufficiently professional (about their asshatery ) has a bot army and knows there are some very devious ways of staying out of the limelight . . . Everyone knows you can sniff Tor exit nodes, public proxies are logged, etc..
Osama wasn't connected to the internet. He used physical proxies, arguably the best kind.
The difference is they knew what he looked like, and IIRC, they tracked him down several times prior to his five year hideaway but failed to act quickly enough. I know it sounds nuts, but if you ask me, anyone who is committed to this sort of anonymity can and will be very successful at it.

If we hear about arrests it's because they recklessly left breadcrumbs (or caught the wrong perp).
If these ppl where smarter they would expose the vulnerability's to the company's and get themselves well paying jobs instead of jail time.
I believe those people are called grey hats and what they do often amounts to extortion (IMO).
am i the only one that thinks this is all some kind of false flag scheme? maybe im just crazy
Who is behind it then? The CIA?
