from what i can say the difference in pictures are impresive take a close look at the sand of nvidia and the ati :O

have to say i was expecting more but i believe with about 270~280 euros for the 3850 crossfire is a good deal

hmm the page is loading slow for me, thanks for the post tho.:)

I'm underwhelmed with the performance of the 3870, I thought it would at least beat the HD2900... maby the 3870 X2 will be good..

Seems like ATI took the image quality crown again. The sand looks so much better with the 3870. And performance isn't too bad either. If it's cheaper than it'll be a better deal in my book. And Crossfire with different card shows just how much more advanced it is than SLI.

Nice review. The thing for me is, ATi cards always improve significantly over 3 or 4 driver releases although of course that cannot be assured in this case but I spose to be fair and un-biased, IQ can actually be improved in one driver release, both driver sets are in their infancy so it's anyones call which card will be the faster in say January, I do like the look of these though and I may just take the risk of a lesser performance and get one hoping for future driver releases to unlock more performance potential, there is no doubting though to be fair to both camps.......both the 8800GT and the RV670 are both damn fine products!

you can clearly see the more crisp and greater image quality and shadow depth. like come on look at the two smaller rocks on the right side of the last few pictures(Shoreline picture)
, notice how they actually have nice shadows on the ATI cards, but the 8800GT leaves out the attention to detail imo

Definatly but like I said, one driver release can improve IQ significantly, it takes several driver releases to get the performance potential.....I am kind of stuck now between the red and green side

Great. HD3870 is more unpredictable than the 2900XT. 3870 wins in crysis, 2900 wins in UT3. Why do this to me DAAMIT?

If they drop the price another $20-30 I'll buy it. Otherwise, I'm getting the 8800GT.

Goodbye Nvidia at last! One 3870 for me now please! I'll get another along with my 790 motherboard and Phenom after Christmas.

I believe that the 3870 being about $60 less than the 8800gt is good enough to win me over. Just invest that extra cash into a killer GPU cooler and OC it like the baddest mofo on the block, then I'm sure you'll see the full potential and worth of the new HD3K series.

Compared to the review over at Legion Hardware, and the odd placement of some of the 3870's scores in this review, I'd be willing to bet there's a good 20% performance boost coming over the next couple (2-3) of driver releases. Wish they had added more TPU's, as that seems to be the only thing it's short on compared to the 8800. A 512-bit bus would have been nice too, unfortunately, it's makes the 2900xt cost far too much. I smell excellent overclockability from this 55nm node. Take a look at the wattage on it, and think about how far you'd push it just to match the 2900. Can't wait to see what some of the OEM's are gonna release as a standard.

This pair of cards doesn't strike me as a limited release, like the 2900pro and 8800gt :nutkick:. By the time they release the next set of cards, these should be under the 200$ mark, and I'll be building a decent rig with em.

Now I need to find a review of 2-3-4 3870's in x-fire.

To all of you talking about IQ. Have you noticed that on Crysis the Ati image is closer to the ground than Nvidia's? Do you know what LOD is and how does it work? I won't say the difference relies on that, specially on the rocks, but on the sand it could be. They are not the same frame so for me they are not a valid comparison. Besides that they look similar o me, not enough to make me buy the Amd if it isn't accordingly cheaper. In the first two images I can't tell wich is better.
About performance. Both cards perform as I thought they would perform. The battle is going to be decided on prices.
But I see them go like that: 3870 20% (or whatever it is) performance penalty over 8800gt, 20% less in price, 40% hit, 40% cheaper and so on, you catch it. So you are going to get what you pay for, wich is good.
But looking how well is performing the 3850 with 256MB, it has confirmed something that I already knew. Tatty_One, Erocker you were in the 8800GT 256 thread weren't you? Note that the performance difference with the other cards can be explained by its specs alone, so I don't see memory quantity affecting the performance even at 2560x1600!! I just say be prepared for the 8800GT too. Amd is going to have another tought hit. :(

Edit: For those of you who weren't on the other thread here is an interesting article about how much memory games use. Look at how much memory COD4 uses and compare it to how it is performing in VR review at uber-resolutions. Anyone still want to discuss to me that 256MB is not enough for a midrange card. Anyone?

Depends on your opinion of midrange....
My idea of midrange is a card that can play any resolution with decent settings smoothly 30+ fps. In that case, no 256mb is not really holding it anymore.

If your opinion of midrange is a card that kinda gets you by with decent graphics in lower resolutions then sure its great.

As for the pics-
ATI generally has better image quality... Would not surprise me at all if it does, to the extent shown, who knows they all look pretty good to me.. People complaining about AA performance... I have NEVER turned AA on, with ANY of my ATI cards and honestly barely if ever noticed any difference. I can't say the same for my many Nvidia's.
I can still run 256mb cards myself because my gaming machines have 1280x1024 screens, and I still run into video ram issues off and on....
