I could run my i7 920 up to about 1.225 CPU volts and passive cool my Noctua in my HAF case.

Outside of Threadripper, Noctua will send you a new CPU bracket if you need one for an upgrade.

Okay so to clarify how bad my chip is. 1.3v and 4.6ghz will instantly throttle on prime95. I know that it's a bad benchie mark for thermals but honestly thing board and chip is weird af.

Might switch my two boards around.. eh.. still looking at all the suggestions guys.

What's wrong with the Kraken x60? What config ? - push only/ push-pull? Pump noise ? How long have you used it ? I have a Kraken x31 with push-pull and apart from the slight ticking on the pump, I am pretty happy with the temps.

You're also running a 54w @ stock chip compared to mine that pulled 164w when OC'd to what it was.(which wasn't much tbh) I think my X60 has two fans on the inside pushing air up/out and has plenty of intake from the giant front fan.

If you have a leaky chip, don't know that any cooler will help you short of LN2.

The "upgrade" when probably be more airflow in the case and a quieter operation. I know it's most likely leaky but not much I can do besides delidding to fix that.

R1 Universal, has Customod covers to match your systems color theme similar noise and performance profile to the NH-D15 / NH-D15S. Similar build quality and a similarly awesome warranty. 100% memory clearance due to the offset design.

When it comes to high end air only three coolers come to mind.

NH-D15 / D15S (ugly as sin but top tier performance / quality etc

R1 Universal (Better appearance 1-2% behind a D15 but otherwise similar in all other categories

Scythe Fuma, (good cooler great price has memory compatibility issues.)

I wouldn't bother delidding it. I don't think it will get you more than 100, maybe 200 Mhz more, and it will still be a high voltage chip. I found my VRM ran cooler with a air cooler rather than a AIO watercooler, so you will benefit from air cooler I think. CPU might be same temperature regardless. But if everything else runs cooler it will all be happier. In my experience, the case as a whole seemed to have better airflow. Plus you never have to worry about your watercooler failing and leaking.

I'm looking at that D15 pretty closely, though how much of a difference am I gonna see between the X60 and D15 in cooling?

i have both and its about the same

x60 better mem compatibility, d15 at one time it touches GFX card

make sure to check website for mobo compatibility

Any more voltage and I'm looking at custom cooling which really sucks I got a loss in the lottery, and right now the only VRM cooling is whatever the front fan blows over.

I had a bigger dud chip than yours in a 3570K that took 1.38V for 4.4Ghz. The Delid didn't even get me to 4.5GHz.

If it really bothers you just sell it, what is wild is the prices on used 4790K are the same as a used 6700k!

I should sell my system and get a 6700K, big cost of the changeover would be DDR4 though.

DDR4 is too expensive tho and I'd need to get 32GB.

I hear you there. I think it would be about $150 for me to update primarily consisting of the cost of DDR4, I got so many other priorities right now though.

Really? wow I was checking ebay prices, sold listings, some good deals out there. A 32GB kit of Gskill DDR4 3000 went for only 199.00 free shipping.

At that price I'd get 64GB and still kill off $400.

No Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT?

Its a good cooler and performs quite well but it gets too close to the GPU on some systems. Mini-ITX and Micro ATX it gets close enough to the GPU to make me personally uncomfortable. Not to mention its massive size means it can possibly conflict with some motherboards depending on how ridiculous the IO aesthetic covers are.
