I'm currently thinking about getting a Blu Ray drive so I can watch movies on my PC. I cant decide on whether or not if I should get an internal or external drive. My only concerns is will an external USB drive have an issues playing back movies? Like will there be any stuttering. Also, will my CPU be a bottleneck? I am using a C2Q Q9550 2.83ghz and I have 12 GB of RAM.

The reason I am leaning towards an external drive is so I can use it on other machines like my two laptops

IMO better buy/download movies on-line. Blu-ray get new DRM and codecs and optical layers every year or two, it also applies to videocards: your hardware is pretty capable for viewing HD content, but with legal Blu-rays you will suffer from DRM.

Just do a "deep research on a wiki", and you will never want to buy new drive every year (because of new tech and new DRM) just for viewing movies. Its ok to have it for software/games/backups, but in last years i burn just 1 DVD, 1 BD and 1-3 CDs for clients and friends.

Codec packs come out that can circumvent drm. Some don't want to wait for a movie to download either, plus streaming services still encounter buffer issues.

external bd drives have to convert from sata to usb protocol, honestly for the desktop you'd want an internal drive. Make sure you meet minimum specs to run bd movies.

Gotcha. The reason why I plan on going to drive route, because the movies I buy are discounted. Like I might find a decent Blu Ray movie at Family Dollar or Dollar General any where between $1-$8. They do come with digital copy codes, but they are usually expired

Set top box is a better way to go if you want to watch the disk. Cheaper and you don't need special software
