I have a stack of machines that have no partitions on the drives, and I just want to do a surface scan and make sure the hard drives are good without having to pull them all out or put an os on the machine first.....

Anyone know of a bootable disk that will do a surface scan?
Make my life a lot simpler here.

you can use solaris dvd, its got plenty of hdd tools

no problem, glad to help (and promote solaris dvd :p)

Will do, unfortunately I have a stack of about 50 dvd/rw drives and not a single dvd r disk...
So it may have to wait till tomorrow

why not burn the solaris dvd onto a dvd rw and then erase it?

Don't have one, I'm at work and leaving in 5 minutes anyways, so wouldn't even have the time to download it.... I'm waiting to get a T3 in here :)

No need for any Linux software. Every HDD manufacturer has it's own diagnostic utility that is available for download at the manufacturer website.

I know that also, but I don't feel like making 4 discs for different drives nor do I feel like making a boot loader.... I'm simply too lazy for that, or well I should say don't get paid enough.

No need to make a boot loader. They provide the ability to burn an ISO image. Seagate's utility tests their drives as well as Maxtor drives. Then you have Western Digital. Not sure how many different brands you actually have.

Me either thats the issue, I know there are IBM, Hitachi, WD, and segates.

What about UBCD (Ultimate Boot CD) has several HDD diagnostic tools and more! Here is a link if interested: http://www.mrbass.org/ubcd/

+1 for the UBCD.
