Bootres.dll Corrupted - Win10 Wont Boot

While writing the eulogy for my father-in-laws funeral next Monday I clicked auto-save in Microsoft Word and my entire PC world went to shit.

The original BSOD said "memory management" but then changed to "critical process died".
Upon further investigation, strrail.txt told me that bootres.dll was corrupt.

I'd like to fix the drive that has Windows10 on it so that it boots.

On a scale of 1-10 for tech-savvyness I'm about a 6, however a lot of this type of jargon is above my head.

I've read through a few posts on this forum where people received assistance and I'd rather try this before dropping $120 for another version of Windows10 and completely reformatting the drive.

Good news is, I can boot into Windows7 and then backup all my work files into Google Drive.

Create a windows 10 USB and start recovery

Also you don't have to pay for Windows 10 again it will reactivate on the same hardware without the need for a new key

When you save a file and PC gets BSOD then that PC has hardware issues like memory/hdd are 1st suspects so repair windows 10 usb stick won't help there permanently but i guess if you repair it then test memory/hdd to be sure it's OK.

Glad that you can get into Windows 7 and recover the data. Honestly, unless you just really want to fix the Win10 boot, I'd skip the fuss, deal with your data recovery, and then reinstall 10, get a fresh start.
There are several procedures that will help you thru repairing, but if, as you say, you're not exactly tech savvy, they might get you in deeper water than you care to swim.
The lightest would be to let Win10 attempt a self-repair. If you've already run thru that, and still want to try to repair, post back up and we'll see if we can send you some steps or pages to check. Otherwise, deal with the personal issues, move the data, and try again with a fresh Win10 load after everything settles at home.

Why not just try the bootrec.EXE then bootrec /mbr, /fixmbr, and /rebuildbcd in CMD in W10 setup USB LINK

The only way that will work is if you're recovering from a backup system image, or initiating a system restore(from a system restore point). The backup system image is usually something that one doesn't have(I don't know anyone who does that anyway), and system restore points seem to all vanish(or corrupt themselves) when one needs them the most.

It used to be that you could repair an install by booting from the install media and doing an in-place upgrade(or similar). But the Windows 10 install media tells you to boot the install that needs repaired and start it from within the OS. A lot of effing good that does you when the install won't boot.

Oh...and startup repair is a joke too. That never works.
