I get that way too, usually on and off. Especially with RPG's.

Bought The Witcher 2 couldn't finish it, DA 1 and 2 same thing, Mass Effect 1 and 2 same thing, Alice IWL same thing, look at my steam menu, see all those games like Brink, BF2, Crysis 2, TF2, + lots of other stuff and couldn't be arsed to play anything....

However, games that I suspect will get me playing again are Dead Island, Skyrim (OMG JESORI#JO) and Rage.

Till those games come out, I find myself sitting at the PC some days, looking at all these games and not being compelled to play any. So I open my Music making program and try to make a few tunes... or search MOD DB for some new or interesting mods.

I don't know if its cause I've played to many games to long, or I'm coming of age too?

I don't know if its age, depression or just a shortened attention span but video games as a whole are pretty boring to me lately. Sometimes you get a gem like BC2 or New Vegas but even those wore on me pretty quick. Almost 200 hours in BC2 and I could care less about rank. Beat NV once and have no need to play it again.

To play games now almost seems like a chore. The only time I can really get into it is when a bunch of friends are playing. Other then that well.....Steam is used for its IM feature more then the games on my account.

Anyone else got into a gaming funk like this?

-Age will definitely have something to do with it.

-The increasing lack of originality in games will also have something to do with it.

-Possibly you are also playing too many games out of force of habit. If you are getting bored, then listen to your instincts and spend time in a way that is more rewarding to you. This is your life that is happening, don't waste it feeling duty bound to play video games.

I am 35 and there is no way anymore can I get myself totally sucked into a video game like I could up to just a few years ago, which frankly is a good thing. I still enjoy video gaming but have had periods where I would sit and play and find it a real chore. What I personally found was that I was playing the wrong kind of games. Games that would get rave reviews which lead me to stick at them for 20 hours of play, convinced that I was wrong and the reviews were right (e.g. any Bioware engine game, all the Bethesda titles, the CoD games), in the end I discovered a simple rule. If I am getting bored by it, if it is a chore to play it, the game must suck and I shouldn't play it. So either stop playing or find a game that you enjoy playing. If the only games you like are shooters then you may have difficulty as most of them are much of a muchness and most of them are utter shit, BFBC2 being the only modern exception to this rule, but you already said u are bored of that.

If you are willing to branch out into other games (that a US based person may not have played) then some engaging and interesting ones that I can recommend are:

Gothic 1 + 2
Risen

and (serioulsy)

Bombjack, a 1984 Tehkan classic easily available using the MAME emulator. How they squeezed so much fluid slick reflex testing gameplay into a 128Kb rom file I do not know.

That's what i mean it in my posts in BC2 and BF3 threads, only team games champoins challenges make the game always new and everytime doing new try and new way gaming plans you get more fun.
But most poeple ignore the idea about making a championchip team cuz the like going missing around in game play without roles or team play, so it will be boring after a while for sure cuz they play without a goal.

I remember playing World of Warcraft for the first time, when ever I play something I know I will like a lot, I get this weird feeling that says, "Keep playing it, discover more!" But now... Nothing, haven't had that feeling for a long time.

Weird, but this happened to me too, not only with gaming.
When i got the new pc parts, all games seemed really stupid, as it was the old parts
which made me play games. I don't even play anymore games and i dont really know why.
This happened to me with alcohol, when i drunk so much that today i cannot even see
anything with it. Same with games, they complete really easy, even difficult games, don't have
any interesting graphics.
BUT! This made me start learning a lot of programming languages, especially Java!
Still i will learn a lot and later i want to create my own games.

Before borderlands came out…I hadn’t played a game (console/online) in 11 months. Then had another hiatus till bad co 2 came out. IMO nothing new, innovative, and exciting really is released anymore. There are titles that I am curious about but that’s normally where they remain…in curiosity. Rage is the next higher budget title I am even remotely interested in trying out.

Lately independent games; Limbo, From Dust, Bastion, Angry Birds are all I’ve been into.

I have From Dust (strategy) and Bastion (RPG) coming out 2 days apart.

Neither would interest you probably but they are 2 really inexpensive amazingly dynamic games that contain elements that higher budget games have failed to include.

Easy to get into, world dynamics that react and change in real time, and all around good titles for under $20.

If you want to gamble (if you were into Limbo) these 2 games are worth a look. And I’d go so far as to say that I’d pay $25 for Bastion

There’s one game that will probably dominate the next year of my life (starting in November) then I have no idea what will happen after that because I don’t see anything I absolutely have to play in the near future other than The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword...

You need to try the emulators on Steam. They fix all that.

LCD doesn't have the color accuracy like CRT besides light guns don't work.

It sounds like you're just burned out from gaming so much and also playing the same type of game.

Perhaps taking a month or two off like the others have suggested would do you good. Then, you could perhaps play something that you can just pick up and drop at a whim and is awesome: Unreal Tournament 2004 in singleplayer deathmatch mode with bots. It's kept me hooked for the last five years and it's still going. A truly awesome game, with gorgeous graphics, runs like greased lightning on modern hardware and is super cheap now. Available from www.gog.com and Steam.

I think a non FPS that will keep your attention is TrackMania. Absolutely manic and tons of fun! There's a free version and an enhanced paid version. Here's the Steam page for the free one: http://store.steampowered.com/app/11020/?snr=1_4_4__13

I bought it and played it for weeks. :D

I'm right where you are TMM. I have no inspiration to play anything and when I finally get around to launching a game I want to quit after 20 minutes. I'm pretty sure that I'll get back into the groove when BF3 comes out, but other than that nothing is very appealing. As for my console gaming, it's down the drain. I haven't even turned on my PS3 in a few months and currently have it listed on CL with my taking a big price hit, but there have been no calls as of yet. Summer just sucks.

I am feeling the same way, I revisit Crysis here and there for a few minutes just to keep my computer from getting hungry. But yeah its probably because I've overplayed all the good titles on PC and can't stomach the graphics on my PS3, I wouldn't worry too much Mailman Skyrim and Battlefield 3 should cheer you up soon :toast:

I always tried to like PC gaming more than I really do. I have a couple dozen titles that I was sure would hook me, but just never did. Most likely it's just that between my ADHD and real time constraints, I never really felt I could put the time into games without feeling guilty. Now with consoles, I can sit down for 45 minutes and play a game of Madden football...then move along. Beyond that, I just can't stay excited or invested in any game. There is just too much life to be living.

Not my fault you live in a swamp that borders hell. It was 81f here today. I shot a 40 on the back 9... Almost got an Eagle today!

Damn. My barely used Callaways have been sitting in my bag unused for nearly a year. It's sad, but Power lifting and golf do NOT mix well. Last time I golfed, I was weak as hell in the gym for a week, not to mention repetition rhythm was way off. The game of golf just needs to be on hold until I've hit some goals in the gym, and finished a meet in January. Then maybe I can get my swing back.

Nothing can beat the Game of Life.

I'm pretty bored with gaming as well. The only games I play on a consistent* basis are FIFA 12, League of Legends and BF:BC2. I believe the reason it happens is because you've been at it so long and there's nothing left to accomplish.

You're always more than welcome to continue trolling. That seems to be your calling. :toast: :pimp:

*Consistent = Once/twice a week at most.

Not to discourage you MailMan78 but it won't get any better with age...

Anyhow for me it is this way , ever since i hit 30-32 years old , the games play got down to a few hours a months (10 or less) to sometimes nothing at all for months but i do on occasion play a bit more but it is kind of a rare thing...

Went doing Video Editing for about 5-6 years but that too got bored doing it , i also have about 10-15 older PC's , more than half of it are AMD others are P1 ,P2 ,P3 & P4 lots of Grapic cards , Sound cards , 10 older HDD's from 10 to 40 GB's , CRT Monitor's , blah! blah!
Built older Gaming PC with Win98se a while back , i may rebuilt another one soon , as i find older games more fun to play with but even that get boring after a while...

Anyhow i am now working on something that may get me more in to games , racing games that is , i will build two cockpits one for me & one for my Dad since i have 2 extras car seats (found them siting beside garbage dumpster) :rockout:

Little project that will keep me busy for a little while... a side from watching movies/tv-series & the occasion gaming & work...

My advice to you is find something else to do for a little while , try other kind of games like chess maybe? or racing (with a good wheel) you may like it after a while?
Just keep yourself busy with something you like or explore something new...;)

Hehe been at this point for so long now as most games do not do what i want out of them. Don't get good games like GR RvS no more so do some thing else with ya life :p.

And i think ya just getting older and know more of what you want which is less of whats being put out there.

Maybe you be happier when Deus Ex and Skyrim is finally release.

Most of my "gaming" time is spent, on Civ builders and RTS, which I run in wondowed mode on a second monitor, something to occupy my time while I do other stuff.

Actually lately, I have spent more time playing solitaire/holdem/chess than any other game.

(I do reviews though and some of the tests take a LONG time to complete)

I don't know if its age, depression or just a shortened attention span but video games as a whole are pretty boring to me lately. Sometimes you get a gem like BC2 or New Vegas but even those wore on me pretty quick. Almost 200 hours in BC2 and I could care less about rank. Beat NV once and have no need to play it again.

To play games now almost seems like a chore. The only time I can really get into it is when a bunch of friends are playing. Other then that well.....Steam is used for its IM feature more then the games on my account.

Anyone else got into a gaming funk like this?

I'm the same way, I really don't enjoy playing video games anymore, it's just boring to me. Most games in my opinion lack the element of something new. The last game I played all the way through was fallout 3. I played half life multiple times and i've played the halos a lot but now, meh no thanks. I'll find something else to do.

I'm no gamer so nope I ain't bored. You can play a game inside game which is inside another game. I don't care how you call it.

You're not alone OP.
I'm in a slump as well when it comes to gaming.
Been playing F.E.A.R, Homefront and Virtua Tennis 4.
None of them were immersive for me.
I play DiRT 3 every now and then but since the public release of the hack , many of the pros are pressing the * near the end of the race for the win when it's a neck and neck.
So I don't play it as much anymore.

You just need to find some other fall backs.

I used to play all the time, but once I got with my GF last May things really slowed. I quit CS, quite playing WoW, and pretty much only gamed for a few hours a week and from time to time playing Mariokart with her. We ended up breaking up recently (2 weeks before our 1 year) and then I was just depressed, and had no interest in doing anything, let alone gaming. I'm just barely starting to get back into. I've been pounding out ESEA Pugs in CS, and am really excited for some of the upcomming titles; Battlefield 3, Diablo 3, Borderlands 2. I think it's really about finding a game that really re-ignites your passion.

@mailman-well i'm 33 aswell... and i remember the first 3d world i ever entered... wearing a 3d helmet and looking round at this very simple yet strangely immersive world...

i found that what had interested me, was the simulated physics... the time it took for the laser to reach my opponant ect...

it felt like true escapism, something my brain could figure... i was encapsulated by it...

when i game now, there iether has to be an epic story or serious eye candy...
otherwise i'm not entertained....

i've boxed since i was 14, and what always kept me enthused about that game in perticular... was being able to develop a complex style... being able to manipulate my opponant thru real world physics.
forward to adulthood and battlefield, i would still get that competition and comeradery i'd experianced in the gym... exactly the same emotion... when i get a head shot, it reminds me of the feeling i get when i knock someone out, or score a goal in football... it was rewarding...

playing a one player campaign in a game that made you feel like you were there.... amazing...

unfortunatly, as time goes on... i find that most gaming experiances are just a regurgitation of what came before, with nothing new... like going to the cinema, watching a film then going straight back in the next day to watch the same film over...

dead space 1 and 2 are definatly the exception...

so i look at dirt 2 and think... do i want to race bots round tracks...not really...
lan with my pal....thats another matter...
bfbc2 kept me going for a while in multiplayer... but not those same maps again and again...urgh...

so if i'm feeling this disenchantment with gaming, as you are...do you not think its simply the fact that there isnt such a sophisticated game out right now to peek our interest???
