Whats happening.

Bricked my Rx 470 due to a bad flash.
After the flash my complete system wont start and the screen stays black. Theres an onboard card in there which is primarily the output.
So i decided to do the 1 and 8 pins and voila the systeem booted.. removed the wire but... when running atiflash the card wont show..
Strange thing here is that after i did the 1 to 8 pin the systeem now boots normally. No black screens before starting. No need to do the 1 to 8 pins..

Any idea how to fix this? Maybe an external programmer to reflash the bios?
In the attachment is the bios chip i located on the board but i cant find any information on the web about it.

(logo) AH1602 25Q21BT E66536 is the text on the chip

I also have an identical 2nd card. Should i try to swap the cards while the system is running?

And this kids, is why you don't flash your cards.

See if you can copy the bios from the other card and reflash the bricked one.

Hi

According to the OP; the wire was removed before using atiflash [this may be the issue!]

follow instruction's below:

- connect pin 1 and pin 8 on the vga vbios chip [attach or loop the wire *make sure the wire is in good contact and that no exposed wire makes contact with other parts of the PCB]
- boot the system with wire attached
-Type at the dos prompt; atiflash -unlockrom 1 to unlock the gpu in adapter 1 [Note: 0 is the primary card PCIe slot one & 1 is the secondary PCIe slot two][*may be required]
- type at dos prompt atiflash -ai 1 [1 if the card is inserted in PCIE x16 slot 1 on the mobo and booting from on-board vga/iGP or PCI vga card default to 0]
- *if card is identified by atiflash!* cut wire

Note: may have to repeat this several time's before vga card is recognised

then flash backup or original vga bios

No, unless you hate the card. Pretty sure it can go in the second PCI--e slot while booting with the good one in the primary slot.

Ofcouse it can. im still unable to reflash the card. Because atiflash doesnt see the card.
Well i dont even have to insert a different card because i have a onboard vga.

Anyone known with this type of bios or where i can buy a new bios chip?
I dont know the logo of the manufacturer.. anyone?

Nice! for some reason i missed the unlock part etc.
Going to give it a try somewhere today or tomorrow. Will post the outcome here.

Is this the pinlayout of the bios chip mentoined above or is it 5 = 8?

The PCI-e standard supposedly has hot-swap support built in.

On a side note , when will these threads end I wonder ? When will people learn ?

People will never learn until they permanently brick their cards. Much be a rich person thing to have expensive paper weights.

Pin 1 CE# = Chip Select Input & Pin 8 VCC =Power Supply
The white arrow indicates Pin 1; connect Pin's 1 & 8 will take the voltage low and allow vga card to be found

Note:
pin 5 SIO = data input/output and has nothing to do with this procedure

You're not doing it right right option again read the directions a lot more thoroughly

This is what i exactly did!

Did this around eight times.. No results. Everytime is says adapter not found..

What you are technically doing it's just disabling write protection real quick until the cards able to boot up you disconnect that jumper right at that point and then do the Flash

That chip looks like the indentation is down not up? Or i can't see one at all, sure you got the right pins? Also the proper way to short it is to boot with 1-8 wired together, boot the computer make sure it "SEE'S" the card under System, then clip the wire(that how you did it)? Try the link in my earlier posting?

Yeah but the funny part is that after the flash the complete system wouldnt start.
After i did the pin 1 to 5 the systeem booted. ( i thought pin 5 was 8.. because of another tutorial on the web. )
Now i dont need to shorten any pin to boot the system.

Also did a test for all capacitors on the back of the card. They are all good. Going to do the front of the card tomorrow.

If i do the pin 1 to 8. Atiflash wont see the card. Unlockrom succes but with the -ai no adapter found
Im out of clues...

In the attachment is the bios chip i located on the board but i cant find any information on the web about it.
That's a regular 2Mbit (256KB) SPI Flash.
Here's a datasheet (literally the first hit in google):
http://www.elm-tech.com/en/products/spi-flash-memory/gd25q21/gd25q21.pdf

If i do the pin 1 to 8. Atiflash wont see the card. Unlockrom succes but with the -ai no adapter found
Before you start shorting stuff, just run the command line ATIFlash and see if "atiflash -i" or "atiflash -ai" shows anything. Again, no wires or jumpers. You said it yourself, that the card boots fine without it now, so there is no reason why it wouldn't show up in ATIflash.

Yeah but the funny part is that after the flash the complete system wouldnt start.
Have you tried to simply reset your motherboard BIOS right after flashing? It may be a UEFI issue and your card is actually fine and needs no shorting/messing/f#@$ing with?

P.S. Also, just for the sake of satisfying my curiosity (and maybe have a little sunday laugh): why the hell do you so desperately need to flash your GPU again, just after it recovered from your first adventure?

Miners are going to keep doing this 50% increase in performance for stock vs modded. Would be stupid not to. Shit happens, considering just how many people are flashing these cards 1 or 2 mess ups a day is an absurdly low number.
