So I'm not playing current games so I have no idea what's needed, but if got a friend that wants to get into pc gaming playing battlefield, call of duty, and similar. He wants it to be a better experience than his Xbox one and ps4. He needs everything tower, monitor, keyboard, mouse. Budget is 1000 but the cheaper the better, resolution target is 1080p 60hz as he doesn't want to upgrade yearly, he asked for something that can handle hopefully 3-5 years.

here is some completed builds on PartPicker, this is agood starting point to se what HW is available in the $1000 USD range. I would personally go with Ryzen 2700X or 3600X a B450 Mobo with Ryzen 3000 series support. Gfx maybe a 1660Ti or RX 5700. My build in my specs cost my $942 minus peripherals, monitor and GFX card in CAD $. USD is way better so more value can be had :D

Probably as good as it's going to get for $1000 usd unless you buy some stuff used.

3 years is probably pushing it for this build there is really no such thing as future proofing especially when your budget is less than $1000. I would go with a R5 3600 but only if you don't have to drop the GPU down a tier. I honestly think nextgen consoles will provide a better gaming experience next year than today's mid-range hardware personally.

AMD will have a 5600 XT out soon and it may be better than the gpu in this build for a similar price.
The 22 inch Viotek is probably an ok budget option if he want's to save another $15 especially if he doesn't care for a curved monitor.

I would probably save up a bit more for something likes this.

Don't forget about software costs (Operating System, etc.). RX570 is really cheap now, those are pretty ok at 1080p (not maxed out, but still at very high quality).

not for 3-5 years.
it can barely cut it for now.

this would be a super nice build
for 1080/60 it should do at least 3 years since that would run current games at 1440p/60 on the gpu side or 1080p/75 on the cpu side no problem.

eot.jpg

if he needs a monitor though....

get this

and save $100 on windows, you can run it unactivated for unlimited time, get the key when you save up.

there's no need to target 60 fps.it might eventually come down to 60 fps at 1080p,but for now,5700 should do 120 in BF5.Look at the TPU review,5700 is in the 90-140 fps range pretty much all the time at FHD.

here's how you can bring it down to $800 and still get good performance for now.but mind that 1600 may struggle in some games already and 1660 super is not gonna last as long as 5700 since it's 25% slower.you may also wait for 5600xt,get the ryzen 2600 and pair it with 3000mhz ram instead of 1600+2666,which is the budget option like I said.

3600x and 1660ti are literally the worst recommendations since they cost extra over 3600 and 1660 super and perform the same.
ryzen 2700x,for gaming, really ? either go with 2600 to save money or get a 3600 for better performance.2700x is only a good recommendation for streaming.

Windows cost is not a factor I've got several unused windows 7 coa's I bought last year for 5ea when I was flipping computers and 10 still activates with 7 keys.

I'm building this and paying for it, and in return he is building my wife a custom reptile enclosure.

Save a LOT of money on factory refurbed grade A video cards (90 day warranty on Amazon renewed).

I have been at this for a long time man and I have used dozens and dozens of them over the years on budget builds and literally zero have let me down!

I love refurbed grade A monitors too. 27" IPS.

For example I just got a MSI RX580 OC for $149.00.

I'm telling your wife you called her a reptile. And shame on you for putting her in a cage! o_O

Being serious, 1k for a build that needs everything is tough for it to last 3-5 years, even at 1080p 60. I surely wouldnt run a dated rx 570 a d start behind the curve though...I like oxru's build so far. ;)

That negates the purpose

I'll take a look at the suggestions, he is also ok with used parts as long as they work. I assume avoid avoid anything quad core though.

If you can find a 1600 AF (it's a 2600 in disguise for $85) that's as low as you can go
for longevity purposes. Definitely 6 core 12 threads at a minimum. If you do go the 1600 AF route make sure it's not a first gen ryzen chip they will likely not cut it another 3 years.

In a year game engines are likely to get their first reset in 7 years most current game engines are tailored to run on pathetically slow vanilla console GPU 7750/7850 level GPU. So it's really hard to predict longevity of any current part past 2 years.

1k for a laptop is very high end in my circles. LOL. I like 300.00 laptops at best.

I could never ever game on a laptop either....not even the best one in the world.

I need 27"IPS and LOTS of air flowability with zero air flow bottlenecks.

Care to elaborate? Most engines have been upgraded over the years, and almost everything is derived work.

Another such statement that could do with a bit of explaining :)

I paid $1,000 for a laptop with a 512 GB NVME M.2 SSD, i7-9750H, GTX 1660 TI, 16 GB DDR4 @ 2666 Mhz, and a 144 HZ 1080P IPS display made by LG.

It won't outperform the 5700 XT recommendations, but very well may outperform the 1660 Super recommendations, as well as certainly outperforming the 580 recommended by Hyderz.

Like, this is results from a 580 on Borderlands 3:
1578332058473.png

My laptop beats it at every single setting preset:
Very Low: 126.76
Low: 120.46
Medium: 99.1
High: 66.32
Ultra: 53.77
Badass: 50.47

Clobbers a 580 by more than 20% at every preset.

Result there shows it scoring similarly to desktops including 980 TI's, 1070's, and Vega 56's.

Nice and that laptop was a damn sweet deal then. But yes, a desktop from scratch is going to cost more initially but once you start upgrading that gap quickly closes, and then some. You're not upgrading the GPU of that laptop for 3-400 bucks a few years down the line. You're also heavily limited in CPU grunt, which the Ryzen desktop alternatives have in spades.

And... let's not even get into the quality and repairability of parts... The segment you speak of ('budget' or bang/buck midrange) tends to cut cost wherever it can and this usually means the enclosure, the cooling, and overall durability suffers. I have a string of bad experiences with this class of midrangers... The class with x60 and price tag 650-1000. I hope your mileage will vary!

This is my recommendation and should last at least 3 years

Plus you will have more CPU options to choose from later down the line if needed

There are laptops with upgradeable GPU's, though they aren't necessarily common. The CPU is very unlikely to be an issue IMO. i7-9750H is roughly on par with a Ryzen 2600 in single-core performance, but does have fewer cores, but neither one should be bottlenecking any GPU's that aren't much higher end.

As for build quality concerns, I agree in general, though I don't think that's a major concern in my case specifically. It uses a Tongfang chassis, has user-configurable fan speed control (lots of budget laptops don't, and they stupidly prioritize being quiet over being cool), and was actually a $1,499 MSRP laptop, but on sale for $500 off.

450/550w 80+ bronze
LG/acer/viewsonic 22/24 inch 75hz
cheapest peripral + keyboard/mouse+ case, etc + linux/window 10(maybe)
that would save half of $1000, so then you can spend for steam ticket, fullfill your games list, or keep it for gpu upgrade so you can catch those fullhd 60fps in 3-5years :)

In a country where 60% don't have a $1000 in a savings account...you consider a $1000 pc to be a "budget gamer" ?

One of us has lost their minds...:).

Potatoes pc matches the one in my spec's...it's good enough to game at 1080p for years to come. Looking at my receipts it was a little under 500. The monitor was a gift and it's an older model. Works perfect though...in fact, it's the best monitor I've ever owned.

Best,

Liquid Cool

P.S. I don't recommend using Windows...but it can be easily had for $10 all over the web.

yes couldnt agree more, why spend such cash for fullhd only, consider mines is potatoes, it can beat any curent games in fullhd still, btw my whole pc is $390 including monitor, i think curent price will on lower now, maybe around $300, dont have plan to upgrade yet, even till now i still used this pc for gaming, so yeah, problems?! nope, i still got plenty cards to boosting my obscure pc :D

Edit:
Enough room or spend few $ more to get your friend a mouse + keyboard, also the Windows 10 free upgrade may still available from windows 7 to 10 if you install windows 10 instead.
I've upgraded a Windows 7 PC and Windows 8 laptop to Windows 10 with no issues late last year.

I like a good laptop but have to agree that there's no competition whatsoever with desktops as a primary machine. The major problem is that heat and poor reliability (which may be a result of the former) is a struggle for gaming laptops. I had one for three years until one day it shut off and refused to POST. When that happens it goes straight into the bin and then you've got nothing. Not to say that desktops don't have issues but at least they overall last much longer and don't need to be discarded when just one component dies.
