Hey all, looking to build a budget gaming computer for a friend.

He'll spend up to 800, but preferably under 800$ CAD (newegg.ca)

He does quite a bit of gaming, and right now he has a Dual Core 2.3ghz, 8800 GT 512 mb, 2GiB ram, nForce motherboard system which performs o.k but really doesn't run anything smoothly.

I need a full build, case and everything, everything needed.

If he can keep his 8800GT and still perform well that would be awesome, but if needed a new GPU would probably be smart.

Right now I'm thinking:

Case:

Processor:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produc...103727&cm_re=Phenom_IV-_-19-103-727-_-Product

HD:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136358

Mobo:

or

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131646

But does this ^ one support DDR2 aswell?

Ram:

Need help with the rest, or help with what we have currently.

Any ideas?

Answer to your question about the ram, no.

Also here's an Intel build I specc'd recently but instead of the GTS250, get a 2nd 8800GT for SLI

Oh and I didn't forget about your locale. I will edit this post with something similar.

ASUS M4A785-M = DDR2
ASUS M4A88TD-V = DDR3

Also, the Green aint a fast drive. I have one, but purely for storage of Music, Movies and TV. Look at a WD AAKS, AALS or a Samsung F3

Case is fine, used to own one and their great. Cases are a matter of taste though, once you get out of the really rubbish ones.

CPU is good. No need to change that.

8800GTs are still decent, but maybe aim for an ATi 5770 if you can.

kinda unbudget friendly with the 965 lol 181 is pretty dam hi :p

How bout trying this :

CPU : Phenomii x2 555
Mobo : Anything with a core unlocker
RAM : Anything ddr3 with 4Gigs of ram UNDER 100
GPU : 5770 or for a little bit more a GTX460
Case : antec 300? *puke* try a CM storm scout with free shipping only 4 dollars more then the antec 300

HD : get a Caviar blue or black.

and for a CPU cooler get a H50 and u wont even be spending over 800$... my build i spent only 680 for a x3 440 a GTX460... u'll spend like 700 for a power house build. Enjoy!

That case actually has great ventelation. This BS about a case has to have 30 fans and holes all over to keep components cool has gone way to far and is idiotic. That case has kept all of my hardware perfectly cool, including several i7 rigs. I've got a Xeon X3220 rig sitting in that case right now, under Linpack load the CPU never sees 50°C using the stock Intel cooler with all the fans set to auto, which makes the computer totally silent, and with the fans set to 100% it never sees over 45°C. If you achieve good airflow in a case, two fans is all you need. A fan in the front and a fan in the back plus the PSU fan, is more than enough to keep any $800 build cool and happy, it has been used for years to keep hardware cool, it creates a windtunnel effect in the case, it actually creates airflow. This BS about "gaming" cases is nothing but stupid flash, and well...BS, they don't help any, and in some cases they do more harm for airflow than good. In many "gaming" cases, there is so many vents and shit in the case, air doesn't have a chance to flow through the case, the vents let the air out before it has a chance to cool anything.

The HEC Blitz is a good case, not my style, but a good case.

Didn't see the space for a 120mm in the front, did you? The spot on the side isn't even meant for a fan, and I don't put one there, it hurts temps more than helps. As I said, a 120 in the back and a 120 in the front creates more than enough airflow.

Yes, the front of that case, I know you can't see blue light shining through so there mustn't be a fan there, right...I explain. The big U shaped swoop that goes from the second 3.5" bay(which is the front USB/Audio panel) to the bottom and back up again is a big vent to let the air in, the 120mm fan mounts behind that directly in front of the HDDs blowing cool air across them and onto the expansion card area.

Or if you prefer a picture:

I have to agree with Newtekie here. I have a buddy with that exact same case. He slapped 2 xiggy fans in it and it performs great. (And is very quiet.)

But IMHO, the HEC Blitz is a nice case for the $$$. It all just amounts to personal opinion.

$800 should build a pretty damn good rig. Good Luck. :toast:

Hey guys thanks for all the replies.

With all the extra costs of shipping and taxes I keep coming up with numbers close to 900$, which to be honest is a little much for me.

I was thinking at just buying a cyber power pc from newegg already built, I'm not looking for something to blow my mind and run games on max I just want something affordable and that runs games smoothly with little fps lag.
This is the one I'm looking at:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229193

any suggestions or should I just keep trying to find affordable parts to build my own via newegg?

ps: i'm the friend and just got showed this site.

That case isn't so cheap after adding in the 2 xigmatek fans. That's another $20 to $30 right there.

Don't, see reason below.

Get the regular Antec 300, it's $5 cheaper since shipping is $10 less. Unless he really wanted front LED fans.

Instead of the 965, get the 955 for $25 less. It's the same thing, especially if you are going to overclock. Even if you don't, 200mhz is nothing.

The green is slow, especially if it's a boot drive, get a caviar blue instead.

Go with a full ATX mobo for expandability. This gigabyte is a great mobo, and $35 less than your Asus (shipping), and has a combo price w/ the CPU I picked out.

No reason to go with DDR2 now, same price as DDR3 and only going to get more expensive. Use this set of G.Skill ram, great memory and the same price as your DDR2.

Need help with the rest, or help with what we have currently.

You still need a PSU and a video card. Don't skimp out on the PSU and grab a GTS250 or 4850 since they are cheap now, even cheaper if used.

This Antec should be plenty, and very reliable. And for GPU use this GTS 250. It's not as fancy as an Evergreen, but it'll do the job given the budget, so unless you need DX11 and Eyefinity, it's probably your best bet. If you have to have a Radeon 5000 card, get a 5750 for a bit more, or stretch for a 5770, but it's a big stretch given your budget and Canadian prices.

Any ideas?

Also need a DVD drive unless you already have one. This one by Asus is probably your best bet.

*Total cost is $666 (in the cart) not including shipping and with $30 rebate.

**If you can stretch it, I'd highly recommend this build instead, much better for only $100 more.

***OP, I emailed the cart to your MSN sign in email, hopefully that's a real email ;)

I think the fans were like $15 for the pair. So the case comes in at under $50 with pretty good cooling. Good deal IMHO.
