Well I will help you out, but you need to go find a few things for yourself first. I recommend going and finding the best parts you can get for 1000 AUS, so peep's can view them, and tell you what would be better for the money, and performance wise.:)

How about a pentium D (thinking 3ghz) with 2 gig DDR2 and an ATi 1800XL PCI-E (or 2 in crossfire) with a nice 250G SATAII and some type of Intel motherboard... That should would be under 1000 USD I believe but I don't know about aussie money.

Hey, alright sweet. :D I'm planning on getting everything from here:

http://msy.com.au/Parts/Promotional_W.htm

This system is for a friend, he mostly plays, Battlefield 2 + 2142, FEAR, Call Of duty 2, SpellForce 2 and Oblivion.

That website looks dodgy. Looks like a four year old created it. Dont buy from it!

List of decent websites:
http://www.Ebuyer.com
http://www.Newegg.com
http://www.savastore.com
http://www.dabs.com
http://www.amazon.com

The games that your friend plays are not really that intensive, any midrange system could play them. However, if he is planning on installing Windows Vista along side some Direct X 10 games extra consideration should be taken care of.

Below is my recommendation if he wants an AMD system.
Ram: 2GBs of ram (1GB minimum)
Motherboard: any AM2 motherboard with PCI-E
Processor: Athlon X2 4400+ (minimum, dual core is a must)
Graphics card: Radeon 1600 pro/XT 512mb (this card is really cheap and can play all those games you listed on high settings. Its only a budget card so he will need to upgrade it to another budget Direct X 10 card begining of next year)
Hard disk drive: 400GB ( 320GB minimum) - He wont run out of storage any time soon
CDROM: DVDRW Drive capable of burning Dual layer discs

u cant get the 3600+ x2 in the states easly, but in oz its readly avalable!!!! i wants one!!!!

Only think it didnt have is crossfire :p

If he's willing to spend an extra $100 or so, he can upgrade to the P5B deluxe, which has more features + crossfire, for $277 @ MSY ;)

(BTW, most/all of the sites on staticice are pretty trustworthy...i built my comp using them, and everything came really fast and worked really well. I paid via bank deposit tho :p)

The 1650 Pro is ok ,but it won't run games like oblivion, and f.e.a.r on high with a high res. Maybe if you overclock it some, but if I were you, I would go for a X1800 series, or X1900 series. Yes they are more expensive, but in the long run you will be more happy. Remember in gaming, a GPU is the heart pretty much.

id go for an X1800/X1900 for him too...but they would be more expensive (id say, around $150 more)...pushing him out of budget :p

Altho, i reckon it would be better to stick with the P5B mobo, and get a X1800/X19*0 card, rather than get the P5B deluxe and get 2 X1650's (around the same price overall)
