The price drops for AMD have gotten them competitive! If you are into OC'ing... get a C2Duo E6600 and ASUS P5B or Gigbyte DS3.

Also if you are into overclocking, DDR2-800 will make you happier in the long run.

i agree, i would head in ther direction of the c2d, there extremly competitive. Also why not go with a G80 card.

Sure, use anything you can. This way, your PC will "evolve" over the next 3, 5 or even 10 years - much better than a complete new PC every couple years - and much cheaper in the long run - and learn a whole bunch about computers in general and yours in particular along the way. A new mobo combo now - then when the budget permits a new monitor, then a new video card - great Christmas gift ideas, BTW. ;)

Little bits at a time will keep you higher up on the power curve for extended periods of time - a good thing. I call it staying at the scabbed over edge - can't afford the cutting or even bleeding edge every year, but I can stay close without going obsolete.

I'm lucky though - my wife likes computers!

regretfully i havent upgraded in a while....
my existing combo wont take any of the newer stuff.

I think the only things slavagable are the
Case
DVR
CDRW
and possibly the power supply ( its 460 watt )

and i agree with ya..
I usta build my own then got out of it for the last few years...

Thanks all for the input and especially for noticing I goofed up on the CPU/MB combo

Ok I need y’alls opinion on a new layout.
The computer will be used primarily for gaming
But I also do touchscreen and ladder logic programming.
If it can handle the games it should have 0 problems with Wonderware or Cimplicity.

Existing equipment I plan to reuse:
Alienware Predator case
WD 250G SATA HD ( 7200rpm 16MB cache )
Pioneer DVD
Lite-On CDRW
Windows XP-64 ( have an unused copy at home )

Power Supply: Raidmax RX-630A (630 watt PS) $98.99
Motherboard: ASUS PSB Delux Socket T (LGA775) Intel P965 Express ATX $182.99
CPU: Intel Core 2 E6600 Conroe $311.00
Ram: OCZ 2GB ( 2x1GB) DDR2 800 $315.99
Video: Saphire100177L X1950XTX 512 PCI Express x16 $409.99
Using stock coolers for now
These are current Newegg prices

Total: $1318.96 + Tax and shipping.

My future plans for this machine is for me to re-learn PC’s and to learn overclocking.
Hopefully this machine will grow with me and stay a good machine for a few years.

Future plans in order:
Add 2 gig more ram
Add better cooling ( better fans or watercooling ) for Cpu/GPU/MB and ram (Cpu and Gpu have priority)
Add second video board ( Crossfire or SLI depending on final build )
Add 2 more drives ( 1 to set up Raid 0 ) and a second for large file storage

You wont need 2 more Gb of ram anytime soon and as for getting another X1950XTX later you would be better replacing it later with a dx10 and even later on another card.

As for the cooling yeah good investment if you're into OC, we can help you with that ;)

Do not go for a Raid Max PSU.
I have heard nothing, but headaches about them.
Get a well known brand name like Antec, OCZ, FSP, or PC Power and Cooling.
I know the OCZ GameStream is around the price of you RaidMax and is much more stable.

Also, you might want to look into the E6400 for the CPU.
It is much cheaper and can easily overclock to the E6600 (the only difference would be the cache). You will save around $100 or so bucks.

I then recommend putting that $100 you saved and get an 8800GTS (XFX or EVGA are the brands I would recommend, plus they have lifetime warranties). These cards are going for about $470.
The reason I say that is bc it is the best card out there right now and would def. beat the X1950Pro you have listed. Hell it even beats two X1950Pro Crossfired.
So in the long run you get a better card and save some money (as well as being DX10 compliant). I know you have a crossfire board, but it just seems like a better option at the moment.
Also, just to let you know I am impartial to the brand (as you can see I have an ATI card in one rig and a Nvidia card in the other).

Also, another spot you could save your money on is your RAM. This is one area I am not an expert in, but from what I have heard is that there is no major performance difference between DDR2-800 and DDR2-667, unless you are OCing the RAM. If you are then go with the DDR2-800, if you are not then go with the DDR2-667 and save some more money.

I do a similar thing like you and keep my system for roughly 4-5 years (so I go all out). If you go all out on the GPU and OC the C2D then your system will def. last a really long time.
Enjoy and if you have anymore questions, dont hesitate.

Go to www.mwave.com and check out their motherboard bundle wizard. I use it all the time as it will only allow you to pick compatible CPUs or RAM for a particular motherboard (or you can pick a CPU and find a compatible board). You don't have to buy there but I often do as they have competive prices. For new builders and pros alike, for only $9 more, they will pop in the CPU and RAM and test them for you. This is a great warm fuzzy for only $9 because not only do you know those components are compatible, but you also know those particular components work.

Thats a good idea Bill to make sure your motherboard is compatible with the Proc. and RAM.
However, I do tend to find mwave expensive (esp. with Video Cards) when compared to Newegg or even TigerDirect.

I certainly use Newegg a lot, and ZipZoomFly too. Between the 3, they are uaually just a few dollars apart. ZZF prices are often listed as higher, but they also usually have free shipping - so once that is factored in, they tend to be very competive too.

Definitely shop around. No one merchant has the best price for all products and certainly customer service, before and after the sale, counts for a lot and MWave shines in that area too.

I also like Monarch Computer Systems - they have some sharp people there that can advise you well if having problems with something you buy with them.

I personally am not too fond of TigerDirect - though I guess they ship to Canada where others may not.

Which OCZ are you getting...? If you want the best go for Mushkin - second best go for Corsair. Corsair has some of the best support of any memory out there, great performance and great prices. The XMS2 - 6400C4 (4-4-4-12) DDR2-800 kicks ass. I've had it running at DDR2-880 (4-4-4-12) & DDR2-1150 at (5-8-8-18), and haven't even played with voltages, or even tweaked timings that much. 2GB Kit = ~$270 (if newegg specials are still going on).

i would try and get a e6300 week 29.mine does 3.9ghz,but you could run it safely at 3.5ghz easily 24/7 and its much cheaper than the e6600.mine runs 3.2ghz at stock(1.25v) vcore set in the bios.

my ram is patriot pc2-7200 ddr2 900 eased latency,which i've had to windows at 1120mhz 1:1 at 2.4v with 5.5.5.15 timings.
