Building my new PC.

I just received the last of the parts I ordered, and am about to start building.
I've made this topic so that I may ask for help building it without everyone having to go through all of the posts in my last one.

I'll be back if I encounter trouble, but hopefully I won't..

I installed everything but the hard drive and cd-rom drive, and powered the system on to see if everything was working.
To my surprise, almost everything was working flawlessly.
Only thing that wasn't working was the fan for the ZeroTherm cooler I installed (Which just barely fits in the case), and that was only because I didn't connect the fan properly.

Speaking of the cooler, I sure as hell hope I applied the AC properly..
I'll make damn sure I check the temperature in the BIOs.

It's taken me a LOT longer than I expected to get this far, and now I'm going to take a short break.
I'll post again later after I've installed the hard drive and cd-rom drive, and am just about to install XP.

I've finished installing all of the hardware, and have left the computer on for a few minutes so that I can watch the temperature.
I'm happy to report that the CPU hasn't gone over 20c, and the system itself is at a mere 28c.

I'm at the BIOs screen, obviously, and am now wondering what I should do next.
Do I need to alter the BIOs settings at all?
Should I go ahead and insert the XP cd?
Or is there something else I should be doing?

You must first select the BOOT FROM CD-ROM before u can just install the CD. Then reboot after you change settings, and make sure CD is in, it will then go ahead and load your OS for you

So I don't need to alter anything else in the BIOs yet?
I should just install windows xp, then the motherboard drivers, and then the drivers for everything else?
I want to make sure I get this right on the first try.

all you will need to change in the bios is the boot sequence as mentioned above, and possible the ram timings and voltage depending on the ram you have....... have fun and enjoy the fun/heart break of the world of computing

Conall, you're doing fine. Relax bro!

You might need to mess around with onboard devices in the BIOS, but that is only if you need to do things like enable/disable RAID, wake on LAN, onboard soundcard, etc...

Use your intuitiveness.

If you plan on overclocking then you will get very familiar with other BIOS options later on.

Ok, I'm about to install XP.

I have two options, install and create partition.
Do I need to create a partition on the hard drive?

If XP sees a legitimate physical drive to install on then go with that. If there is no legitimate drive available then you might need to create a partition. If you create a partition then use the maximum allotable size for it.

My guess is that you should NOT need to create the partition, but I have had to do it in the past.

So far, so good.
XP is installed, and I'm currently installing the motherboard drivers, and then I'll install the modem and activate XP.

I'll let you know how it goes..

Edit: A window appeared telling me that the "INF" file is being updated.
It's been about 10 minutes.. How long does this usually take?
Hope it hasn't frozen..

Edit 2: Nevermind. Got it to work by restarting.

No point activating until you know for sure it is stable. Not so much of an issue with XP but is very good practice for Vista.

Wow, that computer is fast.
Takes just a few seconds to boot into windows, while this old HP takes a minute or two just to get to the log-in screen..

The computer is running beautifully so far.
CoreTemp shows one core at 20c, the other at 17c.
ATITool is showing the card at 35c idle, on the stock fan without having increased the speed manually yet.

I'm about to install the modem drivers and attempt to set up internet access on it.
Unless I have some unexpected trouble, I won't be back for a while.
Chances are I'll be downloading XP updates for the next two days..

I've downloaded the updates, and finished setting everything up. I'm using it right now.
Unfortunately, I've encountered a problem..

My speakers aren't working properly.
I've got the volume up to max, but everything that comes out of them is like a whisper.
Any ideas why?

All that I know about them is that they have "Polk Audio" printed on the front.

Is this correct?
Customize > Low-level system settings > Enable low-level fan control > Fixed

I've set it to 100% using this, but am not sure if it is working.
I've heard that the 8800GT fans are loud when maxed, but it doesn't sound any different.
No change in temperature either. Still idling at 38c.

Set it down to 50% then back wait a few seconds, set it back up to 100% and listen, you should hear it get louder. It won't be entirely noticeable unless your close enough the pc, and theres no other loud sounds in the room.

Well if it isn't that loud, I wouldn't be able to hear it.
I have three large case fans running.
Still no drop in temperature though.
