Building new comp

I'm building a new comp and I thought I'd run this by you guys to see if there's anything I should do differently. I have a budget of $740 and this totals up to $694.

Case: Thermaltake Chaser MK-1 - $145.81
CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K - $319.99
Cooling: Corsair Hydro Series H80 - $86.26
Mobo: ASRock Z77 Extreme4 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 - $134.99
RAM: Patriot Gamer 2 Series 8GB ^ free w/ mobo

I have a OCZ ModXStream Pro 600W already which I was gonna stick in there. I know there isn't a video card too, I have a gtx 260 which I know is getting old but I plan on replacing that soon with a gtx 670 or 680. Any suggestions or ideas would be very cool. Thanks!

Sorry if any of these questions sound demeaning, but I've got no clue where to begin.


1) Do you already have an HDD?
2) You'll have to reinstall an OS. Did you use an OEM copy (and thus have to buy another), or a retail copy?
3) CD/DVD/Blu-Ray drive. Do you already have one?
4) What is the purpose of this build? Gaming, encoding, and surfing all require a few tweaks to any build for best performance.

If you can offer answers to those questions we might be able to offer advice. Otherwise, the build looks solid as a general performer. That 260 will be bringing everything down though....

I'm building this computer primarily for gaming. I have an HDD and I'm all set with an OS and CD/DVD drive. I just want to get good FPS in newer games because my e8400 is getting old. I read somewhere that the main differences between the i5-3570K and i7-3770k are just hyper-threading which is used mainly in heavy video editing and not used in gaming. Would I be better off geting a i5-3570K and saving some money since I'm just gonna be gaming? Or is hyper-threading gonna be used in gaming in the future maybe? I want something pretty solid so I can play upcoming games for the next bunch of years.

That's correct. No real benefit with the i7 over the i5 for gaming

I really like the Corsair Carbide Series 500R linked above, I think I'll go with that and the i5. Is the mobo I picked out good enough? or should I get an ASUS P8Z77-V PRO LGA 1155 Intel Z77? Thanks so much for all the suggestions and advice.

The ASRock is fine and a nice deal. I don't think the ASUS is worth the added $
The Corsair Carbide Series 500R is a great deal after rebate. White or Black?

Take a look at the 550. I think it has more room if you ever go to a big radiator on the top. Its one of my favorite cases. Look at some youtube videos reviews of both

Yeah, save the $100 from the CPU and put it towards a nice case.

I would get better cooling than the H80 if you intend to overclock. Ivybridge runs hotter with the 3D Tr-Gate transistors.

Look at the H100 or beter yet, the Asetek 570LX

De-lid that 3770k and you can run the H80.
