My friend, whom was feeling very down after the passing of his father, and after coming into a lot of money decided he wanted to upgrade his computer so he can play games for quite some time. So I decided to do a bit of digging and came up with this setup:

- AMD Ryzen 3700X
- MSI MDG X570 Gaming Pro Motherboard
- 16GB Gskill Ripjaws 3200 Mem
- XFX RX 5700 XT
- Rest of the parts were from existing system

Here is the exact parts listing: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/p3kyp8

I chose the XFX cause it was the cheapest. On the list it shows $529.99 but I got it for $519.99 with an additional 5% off due to it being a return (I asked what was wrong and the customer traded it for a 2700 Super. Card was fully tested prior to being resold). Plus the case he initially got it for about $90 and the other parts were also on sale initially.

Anyway, after installing a fresh install of windows 10 and testing it out on games at 1440p, I have to say I am just very impressed. The system was flawless and just ran so well. It put my 4770 and gtx 1070 to shame. Now I am looking at it myself (Ryzen 3700x) but need an mitx mobo and to be honest, waiting on the x550 chipset motherboards cause these 570's are way overpriced.

But wow, have to say, it really is quite the jump. He went from a Intel core i5 3570K and a RX 580 8gb. What a jump.

I'm really glad to hear it is all stable, so many people have said games keep crashing and freezing with Navi gpu's.

I'm still tempted to do an all AMD system. I am waiting for RX 5800 XT, which I expect to be out within 6-8 months. Going to be a long term purchase for me, so I want a bit more horsepower than just a 1080 ti level of performance, and I think RX 5800 XT is going to match if not exceed 2080 super.

Well, so far for me I'm waiting on getting same cpu but different motherboard.

At first I was worried cause his Mobo requires a 4 pin and 8 pin cpu connector and his psu didn't have it. After a bit of reading around even on msi forums, found out it doesn't require it unless you do overclocking which he won't.

Edit: FYI, so far only tested GPU in greedfall and Skyrim. So far so good. But we will see. From my understanding, the GPU issues were due to drivers?

The issues are mostly due to drivers, since it's a new card/architecture, there may be some teething issue that needs to be sorted out by the AMD driver team. I'm running a Ryzen 3 rig myself, with a PC VEGA64 Red Devil which is holding my system back in games somewhat (I play at 3440x1440), only reason why I'd not gotten an RX 5700XT is due to my holding out for NAVI 21 and NAVI23 (RX 5800XT? and RX 5900XT?). Do post and let us know when you're gonna start on the Ryzen adventure.....

well, hopefully I will get it sooner than later. Guess I gotta rob a bank or start pan handling lol.

Serious though, your Vega 64 should be great though. I know his roommate, got a Vega 56 (I installed it and all for him) and he is loving it. Runs all his games at max and he hasn't faced any issues.

I'm thinkthing of 3700x too,but I'm scared of voltages and temps coming form a cpu that was dead silent on d15s.
what voltages and package wattage are you getting during gameplay ?

didn't check. I only had maybe an hour or so after doing all the work and installations to do testing before I had to leave for home.

ill have to wait till next weekend. Hopefully I remember.

On another note, the stock cooler is quite good. Its a bulky boy and he absolutely loves the RGB. I myself think its rather decent but I am not a huge RGB fan. Actually, I don't care for it at all tbh.

nice. Be sure to include a new PSU while your at it. No sense on taking chances with new hardwares ;)

PSU is half a year old. In terms of stability, the system doesn't draw close enough to 600w so I think it will be OK.

I think picking a MSI MB is never wrong, beside that i would use a BitFenix Formula Gold 650W wich is very quiet and safe.
Also i would go with a quiet AMD GPU as first goal since in Canada the cost for electricity is on the lower end compared with e.g. Germany.
Beside the RadeonVII there is nothing "red" coming close to a 5700XT, yet.

XFX does not really build any good cards and the Thicc and Raw variants are even worse than the Ultra
decibel-wise i made a comparison list with w1zzards reviews to show the noise comparatively

we are only 9 months or less away from ryzen 4000 though, and I really think the release cycle will slow down after that... maybe even sooner than 9 months as I expect intel 10nm or 7nm is being ramped up for a late winter release. i think i am just going to be patient a bit longer for navi 23 and ryzen 4700x, i have plenty of backlog to keep me busy that my gtx 1070 maxes out still :D

I'm pretty sure that is how it read. The design has been finished for awhile now, the engineers are working on Ryzen 5000 now. So I expect it will be summer 2020 actual shipping yeah.

Yeah, I am just guessing. AMD is in talks with Samsung to help production though I thought, so shortages shouldn't be an issue within a few months, but I have no idea just guessing.

I was talking to a friend in the tech industry and he said something like that just last night (AMD working with Samsung)

If you plan to undervolt and slightly underclock then the Reference 5700 XT is a good deal, if you plan on running Stock: Stay away! They are insanely noisy and hot when running Stock. Please buy a Sapphire Pulse og Powercolor Red Dragon if you plan using Stock settings. They are the best of the budgetcards.

Please people, stop giving suggestions on what to buy when the whole system has already been purchased. At least take the time to read the first post.

And the RX 5700xt seems to run fine at stock settings. I may try to undervolt it later but as of right now, my friend is drooling over his new (and yes, built) machine.

BTW, as a side note - ref XFX 5700xt is $500 CAD. If you want one with a aib specialized cooler, they are either not available or about $100-120 extra. At that point, it's too expensive.

Sorry, misunderstood, not very good with english. Watch the temps on the 5700 XT, they are not good. I have the same card, running stock mem often went past 90C. If you undervolt it to 1060mv which I did without problems and set max clock to 2000MHz, it got 3% faster in games, 10C cooler, silenter and used 30W less in gaming :)

what voltages and package wattage are you getting during gameplay ?
My 3700x idles around 30-32c (with the new BIOS/AGESA ABBA, with AGESA ABB it ilded at 32-24c) and maxes out around 60-62c after hours of gaming.
I played Gears 5 today for about 2 hours and it never got above 62c and was Boosting between 4.275 and 4.375 GHz.
My max voltage was 1.38v in HWInfo with Performance Enhancer set at level 2 in BIOS (this uses AMD recommended settings).
If I set my Performance Enhancer Setting in BIOS (PBO Overclock settings/tweaks by The Stilt and Asus) the voltage gets as high as 1.48v.
