ah thats a shame. I kinda like mushkin as a brand, and while over the years I find them more niche almost in that I buy them for specific things, I do try to show them love when I can.

Me too. I still have an old Mushkin 580W PSU from 2009 chugging away in a computer that's running with 4 x 1GB of Mushkin DDR2 RAM. My first SSD was a 32GB Mushkin and it still works too.

Four years is not that old. By that, I mean it likely is not a first generation SSD that had limitations on the number of writes it supported.

How did it die? Did the drive actually die, or was it killed? By that, I mean a severe power anomaly, for example, can take out a SSD and that is not really the SSD's fault.

If you meant "burnt" literally, your nose should be able to verify that. Anyway, it is too bad. Fortunately, you made a wise move to have a current backup! :)

Was a huge Mushkin Fan back in the day. Tested some of their DDR4 and was seriously disappointed to see SpekTek ICs, which are rejects from Micron. Performed like poop too.

On the other side of things, I also had an SSD die last week, but it was a 10 year old G.Skill Pheonix! It served me well, cannot complain.

yep I'm so glad I had backups that really saved me. even though I bot the Drive 4 years ago it first hit the market 8 years ago

hi, I was looking for a good defragger for my 10TB HDD Malwarebytes and windows defender flagged all that I tried to install as infections so I'm using built-in defragger is that good enough?

Windows own defrag tool (called Optimize drive) is all that you need. Yes, there are defragging tools that are slightly more efficient but as soon as you start using the drive again, fragmentation starts occurring again. So any advantage a 3rd party tool gives you is quickly negated. Plus, any 3rd party tool requires downloading and installing which just takes up space, possibly adding to your fragmentation problems.

That said, is your 10TB drive that full that defragging is needed? With modern drives being so fast (compared to 10 - 20 years ago), it is no longer important or necessary to consolidate free space and/or move files to the front of the disk. The R/W head can easily and very quickly find the first file segment no matter where on the drive it is. So all that really matters is all the file segments are saved together. That should be easy with such a large drive - unless it is near full.

Last, if the drive is installed internally, defragging is done automatically by Windows. You never need to do it manually unless you dinked with the default settings - not recommended.

Fill it with music or movies, then format it IIRC.

Wouldn't a secure erase reset the flash cells to a zero state without wearing down the flash with writes (low level format?)

Wait, I'm confused here. So you sold your "stopped working" Mushkin SSD to another person as a functional Mushkin SSD? So you tried to scam the buyer then. I said "tried to" as it turns out that the Mushkin SSD was never the problem, so the buyer still got a fully functional SSD but still you tried to scam the guy. Unless you sold it as a defective SSD then you should be ashamed of yourself!!!

Thank you.
Although you did made a big mistake & assumed that your SSD died & it turn out it's fine but you already gave it away. :nutkick: My condolences.
At least you made another person a very happy one. No chance of getting it back? At least contact the guy to make sure that it's really fine just to be sure.

no, I gave it to him so it's ok, besides it gives me a reason to get a gen 4 2 TB M.2 in the future when I save enough money for it

Getting another Mushkin brand? That's what I would do to replace what I just gave away.

Also forgot to add, make sure to call the guy & tell em that the SSD might be fine & confirm that he is using it as a drive & not as a baseball or Frisbee thinking that it was really a dead drive.

lol, I did tell him he said he is going to upgrade his system with it. I don't know if Mushkin has 4gen m.2 but I'll look into it
I just looked and they only have 3gen
