Choose the combo at the bottom for two 8346HE's and the price drops to where you get the motherboard for free. Now, it will cost another thousand dollars to go quad (and another $2K+ if you want to go 8-way) but it does have 4 PCIe slots, great for a couple 295's, or heck, four 295's if you use flexible extenders.

Not bad as it also comes with a suitable power supply. Find a set of four Opterons on eBay for cheap (I've seen it happen before). Make sure to check the Tyan compatibility list as this is not one of their newer quad boards. Also, there are low profile 9600GT's, in case anyone was wondering.

* Note: while I'm playing this deal up, please realize that this is more of a show piece. 8346HE's are 1.8Ghz Opterons, far from the fastest chips out there. At least they're High Efficiency *

Yeah! And the CPU daughter board can be bought to expand the system to 8-way!

Sorry, just so excited about these things as quads were expensive back in the day. Quad 900Mhz Xeon system -- well over $10K. I owned a couple quads, but I bought or was given them well after their prime.

Also, here's that low-pro 9600GT I mentioned earlier. Set @ 675Mhz and uses a molex connector for additional power.

It is a good deal. However, I won't be purchasing it because it uses an Nvidia chipset. I will stick to my AMD based Socket F board for now.


The board I am using for my rackmount now uses what is now known to many of us as the 790FX and I bought the board back in late 2007 I think. It does have an early version of the SB750 which supports ACC as well. It is a DUAL SOCKET F board.

I was going to post in another thread that turned out to be too old. And rather than start over again, I'll list my reasoning here. I actually brought this board. I should get it on Tuesday. I too had been lusting for something like this years ago, when I saw Supermicro and American Megatrends (when they still made computers) selling systems with four-sockets on a single board. I'm sorry, that just sounds like a line out of Superman. Faster than a speeding bullet, with four-sockets on a single board!

I was really convicted that I needed to buy this board immediately if I wanted to have one. I brought this board last Thursday. And Newegg raised the price two days later, by $100. If I hadn't acted on my conviction, I would not have been able to afford it. Add to that the fact the board has been discontinued (EOL), I likely would have never seen one again.

well the way i see things, its better to have more than less, having dual cpu's means when games etc come out to access thoes mobo's you will have it ready for you, instead of going out to buy another upgrade

This was the reason why I chose the board I have now. I had a Tyan S4980 before this one. The board that's on the way to me now, is the Tyan S4985. They are both four-socket boards. I chose AMD Opteron years ago, because they only use one socket pattern across all of their servers. Which isn't true for Intel, who markets different sockets for each segment. So anyone is able to run a dual-socket chip, on a four-socket board without penalty.

No one that knows what they are doing buys a dual-processor system just to play games. Dual-processor systems work great for compiling maps for games (8 threads instead of 4) and working with heavy software like CAD apps.

I'm building this system for compiling software packages for Linux (my operating system). I want to offer a community build engine for others to have remote access in compiling their own software in a unified environment. So there is a purpose to my madness.
