This problem just started. While playing the game Dirt 2 my computer starting making a high pitch buzzing noise. It comes in and out for a couple seconds. Since the sound is not sustained it is difficult to figure out where it is coming from. I installed heat sensing programs and my computer doesn't seem to run hot. I think the CPU gets up to about 40 C and the GPU gets to about 50 C. Anyone have any ideas what this may be? Thanks

Sometimes my graphics card buzzes/hums when I play a graphically intense game. I think that is normal.

It's normal on most graphic cards, don't worry, nothing is wrong with the temperature or the card.

So is it the graphics card? It seems weird that this is normal. It is definitely a buzz and not a humming noise. It cuts in and out for a few seconds.

Yes it's known as coil whine.

Okay then I won't worry about it. Wish I could get it to stop. It's pretty annoying. Thanks

I have figured out where the noise is coming from! it is coming from the speaker on my motherboard. Is this telling me it is getting too hot?

It's telling you that the speaker is not protected from interference nearly as much as it should be.

Are you sure? It only acts up when I play dirt 2 after about 30 minutes. I turned of the game and it stopped. Other games like Bioshock dont seem to cause it.

Take a look at the wires (post a pic if you want), 30 minutes sounds good enough for something that's really getting strained to build up an electrical field that'd mess with analog speakers enough to make some sounds.

Of course I could be wrong, I'd have to have a good look at the mobo to tell....

You could also run some program that could tell you how much of your CPU (I doubt it) or GPU (seems close to where the speaker is) is being used. Sorry, I can't think of any off the top of my head (Rivatuner might be able to, but I'm not sure).

EDIT:
I found a huge picture of your mobo (through the system specs) over here if somebody wants to take a look.

Try using a paper towel tube. Put your ear next to one end and point it towards the video card or even the PSU. And run the game(s) that make it make that sound.

Be careful while you do it and make sure no capacitor9s) are near the other end of the tube

When I first got my reference 9600GT card it whined like a mother when it was pushed hard (Crysis made it cry) and I was like WTF is this. I heard it was coil whine in the chokes when the thing starts pulling high power. I didn't worry about it and it actually went away. It just kinda got quieter until I realized it was gone completely.

according to my brother it's the high frequency RAM that makes the whining noise, it took me forever to find out what the hell it was. It happens all the time when I play ArmA 2.

If it is just like a clicking noise, that should just be the circuitry sending and receiving the electrical currents. I know that they have fixed most of that in the newer motherboards, but I recently got on an older computer and it did that every time it was stressed, aka opening word lol. Now an electromagnetic field would in fact cause this to happen to, but it really should start happening early in the game, after about 5 mins, which is ample time for a graphics card to really get going.

And if it appears to be neither of those, try moving the motherboard's speaker off behind something metal, or plastic even. The plastic would block the field almost completely, and the metal should absorb it.

Also one question, is your internet connection wireless on that computer?

Thanks for all the replies but it is the motherboard temperature warning. Using SPeedFan is appeared my CPU was getting close to 60 C. I checked the BIOS and it was set to a warning beep at 60 C. So I changed it to 70 C. Is this a dangerous temp for Phenom X2's? From what I read you do not want them getting much hotter than 60 C. I should probably buy an aftermarket CPU cooler.

glad you sorted it, has the buzz gone, my worry is that a buzz is different to a beep

I have never let any of the Phenom II's I used to own get to 60+C. You should find out whats causing the temps to be so high and fix that rather than just setting the warning temp higher.

Changing the warning to 70 made it stop buzzing/beeping. There is not doubt the sound was coming from the little speaker on the motherboard. I know because I could put my finer on it to muffle the sound. I am a little confused though. Speedfan doesn't have the temps labeled. They are Temp1, temp2, temp3, and core. I am pretty sure that Temp2 is the CPU which is getting up to over 60 C when I play Dirt 2. Otherwise it is about 45 C when not gaming. Do you think it is getting hot because I am using the CPU stock cooling fan? A better fan should help?

What is the Core temp? Is that the motherboard temp?

Core temp will be the one you should be looking at in relation to your Phenom's temps.

Temp 1, temp 2, etc, are probably NB, SB, etc temps.

What I know for sure though is that I hate SpeedFan  Try using the program CoreTemp and see what the CPU is running at or maybe even AMD Overdrive (I haven't used it but it should have temp values, no?).

I have core temp as well. This shows a core temp in the 30's which coincides with the core temp on speedfan. When I go into my BIOS and go to CMOS it says the System temp is 33 and the CPU temp is 48. so the system temp is the same as the "core temp" and the CPU temp is the same as the "Temp 2" in speed fan.

AHHHH! Downloaded AMD Overdrive. They have TMPIN temps. The CPU temp that my motherboard is reading is TMPIN 2 temp which i guess is the northbridge. So AMD overdrive says my CPU is running in the 30s. THanks Onedub.

That is kind of messed up that the Motherboard is getting the wrong CPU temp. is 60 C temp high for the northbridge?
