Call of Duty: Black Ops First Look Preview

Last week, at a pre-E3 event, Activision showed members of the press portions of two missions from Treyarch's upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops. The game, set during the Cold War era, looks to follow in the footsteps of Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2. This isn't a bad thing.
I was shown portions of two levels, each different in intensity and objective. The first, began at a US Air Force base with the player and a co-pilot hopping into an experimental plane and taking off to provide surveillance to special ops soldiers on the ground at a Russian weapons facility.

The player controls the camera and directs the soldiers via a mini-RTS interface, having the men take up positions and hide from Russian patrols. When the danger has passed, the game shifts to the perspective of one of the foot soldiers on the fly.
The mission continues in classic Call of Duty fashion--up in the snowy mountains and very reminiscent of Modern Warfare 2. What begins as a stealth infiltration quickly turns into a frantic firefight leading to a quick escape from Russian reinforcements. The set pieces are great and the environments look fantastic, if not better than what you've seen in MW2. Treyarch has really stepped up its game.

The second mission was set during the height of the Vietnam War as American forces, attempting to stop a brutal massacre, are caught in the thick of it as the player's helicopter is shot down. The player and his ally make their way through buildings making use of a semi-automatic shotgun with incendiary rounds. Ammo and gun modifications will be at the forefront of Black Ops' offering.

Eventually reaching the street, the player is given the ability to call in for helicopter support to level buildings full of enemies and destroy tanks. The mayhem is bloody and impressive. What we were shown is definitely looking good, especially given that Treyarch has more development time left to polish and fine tune.

Multiplayer was not discussed or shown, but I would assume ammo modifications and weapon attachments will play a big role, possibly mirroring MW2's unlock system.

We'll find out more at E3 2010, which kicks off on June 15th.

Helmed by Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty: World at War developer Treyarch, Call of Duty: Black Ops hits PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii on November 9, 2010.

Is that actual gameplay graphics?

If they are then I will be more than pleased even though the game is gonna suck (Treyarch ;[).

As much as Treyarch has disappointed me, I'm looking forward to it. I'm starting to have withdrawals from not having 'fresh' CoD game play.

u kno, i always found it interesting that CoD MW2 still uses dx9 and the graphics are still right up there with dx10 titles. And this CoD looks even better yet still uses dx9....kinda makes me think that dx10 was dam near pointless excluding titles like crysis, stalker series. I mean if they'd said this was dx10 would anyone dispute it? doubtful.

Treyarch did good with cod5 imo nazi zombies was fun and the campaign while short was good no reason why they would screw this up.

Next after this I want something new not MW3....

Looks alright to me, never been about the graphics for me. I'm still playing Counter-Strike 1.6 because it's a GOOD GAME, not because it's pleasing on the eyes. If i wanted to please my eyes I'd go to a strip club.

Haha, great quote. But still depends on the game.

Black Ops looks alright, CoD has changed a lot in recent years and it will never get as good as MW1 was but y'no, times change.

Graphics wise game looks great, engine is old, but imho realy powerful, as for gameplay... Will not give hopes up, probably will be just a good shooter within 7.5-8.0 from 10 range.

IMO Treyarch did a great job with WaW. I can only speak of the console version, but whenever there were bugs coming up in multiplayer they squashed them as fast as possible and really supported the title.

This looks pretty good, just a shame it's another Activision game, so I won't be buying it.

I'm buying it ....For sure

Treyarch rules Ive liked them more than IW They offered twice the game with WaW than IW did with MW1&2 combined The only problem I had with WaW was Punk buster But after IW.net Punk Buster looks to be a much shinier Turd

From the multiplayer players...i think a bit if disagreement is in order. They only did the game justice on the PC 6 months or so after release? By then, my clan at least, had moved back to COD4.

its because everything is static and doesnt move, so they get better performance and can make the visuals 'just right'

when you blow up a car in MW1, its only got two models - intact and blown up, and they cover it in fire when they change. Grass/trees dont move, objects dont get destroyed (but at least bullets pass through em :p), lighting is static... and so on
