Calling anyone with a Intel 10980XE.....

This is a bit of a fact finding mission for me..

Short story.. I have a EVGA X299 Dark that needs a CPU, I'm looking at the 7980/9980/10980XE models of CPU. I figured that since the 10980XE was the newest and yadda, that it would be the one to get my hands on for the motherboard...

So I've a few simple and easy questions and I'm hoping some owners of the CPU/s could help me out

What have managed for an overclock with your CPU? Is it better to undervolt it? What volts do you use?
Do you use custom water or do you use an AIO or even air?

I'm just wondering about the CPUs because I wonder if there's massive difference in how far they overclock? If I'm buying one, much like my 5960X, I'd rather it wasn't a dog of an overclocker. You pay that much for a CPU, you hope to get a decent one, or something good at least

First of all, if you go with the 10980XE and want the full performance out of it you might want to search for the latest OC bios for the X299 Dark that disables the security fixes. The 10980XE does suffer a lot from those, if you compare clock to clock performance with earlier 7980XE results the 10980XE is a bit worse due to these security patches.

EDIT: Also, if you got your board retail it probably still has an older bios on it which means you can not boot OR update bios with the new CPUs. You need a 7XXX series to update your bios or contact EVGA and they send you a chip with the latest version on it for the one socketed bios chip.

I got a daily OC of 4.8GHz all core on mine @1.18Vcore. That is just setting the single core turbo to all cores. For 4.9GHz I need 1.24Vcore. For me I wanted to stay at these low voltages because thermals are very difficult to manage.

I use a custom water setup with a huge external radiator, @1.18Vcore my temps are:


71°C on the hottest core BUT that is with liquid metal on the IHS (not under, I did not delid) and an ambient/water temp of just 20°C. Thanks to the huge radiator this is sustainable since the water temp only rises to about 25°C with constant load.

If you only task it lightly tho, like in games, you could easily run higher voltages and run 5Ghz all core. But I would doubt you could cool that on an all core load for 24/7 with ambient methods.

I highly suggest you use atleast some form of watercooling on this beast. Especially if you plan to OC.

As for OC potential it does need much less voltage compared to my 10900X sample that I had so in the end I reached the same 5GHz all core on both CPUs with the difference being that the 10980XE only needs 1.3Vcore while the 10900X needed around 1.45Vcore for the same frequency. Both hit close to thermal limit under the same cooling setup tho.

So in the end you are limited mostly by your cooling capabilites. If you were to take the huge risk of delidding the 10980XE and run it direct die cooled with liquid metal and a big water setup (SMDs are so close to the lid that you can NOT move it horizontally at all, you need to melt the solder and move it upwards), you could probably expect 5.0GHz to 5.1GHz as possible daily all core frequencies. When you only game on this CPU add another 100MHz.

What I recommend for any use cases that task less then 20 threads (e.g. gaming?): Disable HT. This takes 15°C off the load temps for me and it requires less voltage for higher frequencies. PLUS you get a big performance boost since secondary tasks still get a physical core which greatly increases performance in e.g. the timespy benchmark.

So for games I just run HT off, 5GHz @ 1.25V.


Another EDIT: Luumi has a nice video on his 10980XE @5.1GHz ambient cooled. But his temps are so good, I wonder that ambient he has.

Don't have an 18 core but read enough and seen benchmarks
4.8 on an aio should be doable at 1.25v
At least with evga adaptive might work but Intel has some wild programed vid's for 10 series chips so you just have to see for yourself lottery and all.
Frankly 9980xe series is better adaptive works better and no delid needed like 7980xe.

But voltages manual of course 1.28v-1.29v should get you close to 4.9 whether you can cool it on an aio :/

Well one of the reasons for the CPU would be for crunching, so maybe settling for about a 1vcore setting, seeing how far I could get that and stable, hopefully at that sort of voltage it would be cool and efficient.

I would be using custom water cooling with it, so at least a 420 rad, I have a couple spare of them and a 560 rad as well. Not sure if I'd be putting this into a case or not, but would think it would make a pretty good crunching CPU. If I ever get a chance for gaming, then I'll try and use it!

Thank you @Dinnercore for letting me know about the updates. I can well imagine that all of the Intel CPUs will suffer from performance loss with all that going on underneath so to speak.

Would a de-lid be adviseable with this CPU? I know with a lot of Intel ones currently this takes off a lot of temp (or can do) Again this is another reason behind asking if a pre binned/de-lidded model would be worth the money because it'll guarantee that speed/performance?

No complaints here with mine. For daily driving, it sits at 1.2V and 4.8 GHz with 18c/18t (HT disabled). I simply don't need the other threads so I run this way (I fell into this platform and CPUs extermely cheap). I probably could reach 5 GHz with a bit more voltage. This isn't tweaked down, just set......test quickly... use.....'stable'.

I run on a 3x120mm custom loop and this heat is difficult to manage. I don't think I can run more than 4.5 GHz with all c/t in very heavy things. Crunching it may work though...

As far as delidding... it's soldered. Don't do it.

I wouldn't worry about the updates, honestly. A couple % loss here or there isn't worth that (to me - regardless if the majority of these security fixes mean nothing to an average end user).
