Can I buy and use a 4790K with my Asus H87M-E motherboard?

Hello everyone,
I have heard that intel no more lets some specific processors to work with all chipsets of the same generation,
and specifically, the k series need z97 chipset!
I dont know how much truth there is to it, but when I checked the Asus motherboard support section (CPU support ) , it is said there, that with a bios update , 4790k is supported !

Core i7-4790K (4.0Ghz, 4C, HT, L3:8M, HD Graphic, 88W, rev.C0)    ALL    2001

So should I worry about anything here or not?

I've used the stock cooler and as long as you're not an idiot to overvolt or prime95 it, you're fine.

default fans do a job but they tend to be louder than an aftermarket cooler, use google to find a decent cooler

overvolt no, but I will be possibly using this cpu for long periods of time for training artificial neural networks (Deep learning to be exact).
I have no idea how much workload would make it necessary to get a new fan (Actually I'm planning to get one, but I need to know if running any training prior to that would do any harm!?)

Lower the vcore until you get crashes, then up it a bit and keep it there. At 4.4ghz across all cores mine can do 1.2v.

Intel i7-4790K is fast and without overclocking and space for overclocking is not big even on Z97.

Finally now Intel launch his successor with similar even higher default frequency, i7-7700K work on 4.5GHz Turbo clock without OC. Very nice Processor.
i7-7700K is Intel i7 with highest frequency.

If you're gonna be running load like that, than an aftermarket cooler is probably a good idea. You don't really want to be running that chip at those temperatures all the time... especially where you live. I imagine it gets hot there. As suggested, Hyper 212 evo should be fine. It's not top of the line cooling for extreme overclocks, but it'll keep the chip plenty cool enough for your workload.

by the way I live in northern Iran, I'm ~25 kms away from Caspian sea, it gets cold in winter (now) but when it gets to the spring and summer, it gets humid and hot (just like any coastal region in the world I guess), so I guess that's not as hot as you initially though it is?! but still hotter than ohio ( 86 F in Aug/ and 39 F in jan)

Still, even if you lived in a cooler climate, I'd think a better cooler would help. You don't really want to be running a workload like that with that tin can of a cooler they give you. It'd be like driving a Ferrari with a radiator from a motorcycle.

I would definitely get a hyper 212 evo, it is not expensive. I first used my 2500k with the stock cooler but it got a bit uncomfortably hot at heavy load even at stock speeds and the 4790k runs even hotter.

Our home is well kept, but my room is sadly an exception , in winter its as cold as antarctica! and in summer as hot as hell!

yeah, If you live in central and south of Iran its hot as hell, there are lots of deserts too. but if you live in northern/northwest and west of Iran its either moderate or very cold!

It seems hyper 212 evo is not available here (all are sold out!) I'll see if I can get one, if not I'll probably try to get a water-cooler to save myself from future headaches concerning the heat!

I agree the stock fan is fine if you don't go to extreme overclocking. Just remember, it is the case's responsibility to provide a sufficient supply of cool air flowing through the case. The CPU cooler need only toss the CPU's heat into that flow.

4970k has got to be one of the best consumer chips intel has ever pumped out, even at stock. I've got mine at 4.7Ghz under a Scythe Ashura and it's never had a problem, though my house temps rarely get into the 80's.

I've run stock coolers on 4770K's and 4790K's. They'll hit their thermal throttle 100C levels on stock cooling and using stress testing like Prime, AIDA, OCCT. That doesn't mean they'll break down or fail, I know a couple of builds sent out where those folks didn't want to buy a better cooler for their K chips nor planned to OC. Sure they run hot..usually in the 80s during Summer. But they haven't crashed, failed or been an issue in the years they've been deployed.

Case airflow is a big thing as stated above. While I do recommend at least a cheap air cooling solution, a Freezer 7 Pro, 212EVO, TX3/4, M9i, etc., it isn't quite necessary. If you hit the thermal throttle limit on a Haswell it backs off in small increments until it can maintain a constant speed. Considering it is a 4.0GHz stock 4.4GHz stock turbo CPU, there's plenty of room for it to back off if maximum performance isn't needed. I would advise against enabling any core-sync multiplier options which can allow all 4 cores to run at 4.4GHz. Leave that at Auto or Default so that the system can run and perform better in a stock cooling and operating environment.

These are hot running CPU's, but at stock you don't need a big expensive cooler, just something a little better than stock will make a nice change in overall case temps, and will probably help keep your graphics card a little cooler as well.

Exactly! In fact, they are all designed to throttle back and/or shut down BEFORE any damage can occur.

It really is not good to run for long extended periods at those extreme thresholds because excessive heat will increase aging a bit. But typically most people retire their systems and upgrade to something new before then anyway. And typically, you start running into stability issues too, causing overclockers to back off those extreme settings, which then allows the processor to run cooler automagically.

Of course some processors don't come with OEM coolers so you have no choice but to go with an aftermarket cooling solution. But I say if the processor comes with an OEM cooler, try it out first. Today's OEM coolers really are quite capable (they have to be to support the processor's 3 year warranty) and they are very quiet too - especially in a good case setup with proper cooling.
