This board has one PCI-E 2.0 x16 and one PCI_E x4 slots. Would cross-firing 2 HD3870's be a waste on this board? I'm thinking I may have to dump this board for the 790 chipset.

ATi cards dont lose that much performance at lower bandwidths. 8x only loses a few percent and 4x loses about 15-30%.

The x4 slot shouldn't give a noticeable performance hit, a measurable one certainly, but nothing actually noticeable.
