i have 250 GB HDD, with 2 partitions . One has xp installed . Now can i install vista in the partition which has xp, can it be formatted during vista setup ?

Yea, if you install Vista over the XP partition it'll overwrite XP and the MBR. If you have some critical files on other partition I'd back them up, it's a good habit.

If you're wanting to dual boot, always install XP first, it's a giant pain in the ass to install XP on another partition after Vista is already installed.
