Hello guys,

I just got a HP z400 with x5550 CPU ( soon to be upgraded to x5690 ) and a xw8400 with dual x5365 CPUs.
HP bios does not provide any settings for overclock so i was thinking of using software to overclock.

I think i bought the wrong CPU i should have gotten the W3690 instead because it's multiplier unlocked right ?

Any recommendations is it possible ?

Thank you

I have a similar workstation (Dell T5500) with two Xeon X5670's. With my particular workstation, I have found that it is possible to overclock with SetFSB, but I could never get much more than an 80MHz OC out of it - with one CPU. The Xeons that can be paired with another CPU do NOT support overclocking. I looked into getting a W3690 for my T5500, but found that since my motherboard supported dual CPUs, and hence dual QPI links, it would not run a W3690 (which only has one QPI link.)

Your Z400 OTOH is a single CPU workstation, so it should be able to take a W3690. You might want to update your BIOS before dropping a new CPU in though. I can't really say anything about the xw8400.

With the W3680/W3690 you should be able to overclock that in Windows using Throttlestop software.
BUT I think the Z400 has 2 different motherboards. One with 4 RAM slots for 45nm 4 core CPUs, and a different board with 6 memory slots for the 32nm 6 core stuff.
You may have to use the W3570/W3580 on that one. Do some research on the HP forums. Those CPUs are dirt cheap.
I'm sure the OP has moved on but others may have this question. There are Z400 overclockers out there.
