Can i use my old x1650 for Physix?

hi i was jus wondering if i can use my old x1650 pro for physix or summat instead of it living in its box till i die im currently running a sapphire hd3870 but have a spare pcie slot spare 4x i fink i know i cant crossfire but still i wanna use it for summat if i can

Physx is an nvidia thing, it won't work on the x1650.

You need an Nvidia card for PhysX. about the best you can do is run a second monitor from it

you could also sell it and get something like an 8600GT and that will do physx..or even an 8400GS

But even if he traded that for an 8600GT isn't an 8600GT too weak to do good PhysX in games? I heard anything smaller than an 8800GT was not worth it. Just wondering if that was true or not?

Back then I was running Win7 RC with 4870 + 8600gt 256 for physx. It ran the physx-only Warmonger game and also the UT3 physx mod pack smoothly. But the physx acceleration in the newer Mirror's Edge game for the cloth + shattering glass effects did have some bad stutters whenever the scene encountered them. I suppose an 8800gt would accelerate that like buttah.

no any graphics card in the 8 series is worth it their on par or above my legit PPU

Best Physx card atm is the 250GTS. It's cheaper than an Agea Physx card, handles very well for a dedicated Physx card, and is power efficient when not in use.

Also if you want a few options the 9600GT is cheap and would make a great ded. physx card. Also the new 210 and 220 are super cheap, draw nearly no power, and are super quite. All these make a good sidekick.

haha yes im feeling ok i was simply reccomending cards based on his budget if he were to sell the x1650 and use the money to buy a physx card..in which case the ones i mentioned would more than likely be in his proce range. however if you want to go all out with no over kill mlee's suggestions are ones i would backup 100%

looks like il chop it in for a smoke then an enjoy it lol thanks for your replys anways not gonna get no nvidia card cos waitin for a hd5870x2 when they r released even if i have to sell 1 of my kids or the wife still i thought i read sumwhere that u can use x1xxx series cards alongside newer 1s

wow your right apparently you can use an x1000 card as physx..i didnt know this as i thought that it was an nvidia only ability apparently though havok now renders on second card congrats bro do it up

According to that u can use the x1650 to render physics calculation BUT Physx is nvidia thing (from 8xxx series and up). You can use the x1650 to calculate physics on havok games to enhance fps BUT it wont work on games that use physx (UT3, Mirror's Edge, etc)

The thing in that article that screams FAIL to me, is it states.... "Now, in addition to dual-card CrossFire™ graphics, a third ATI Radeon™ X1000 series card can be used to deliver the most powerful physics processing performance available for the most true-to-life representations of reality possible."

Then later they make it sound like it is any mainstream or high end GPU "should" work. Install the card and give it a go, see what happens. If it fails you are only out the time, if it works you're a genius

remember it will only support havok phisics not physx so youll need to compair frame rates of those games with phisics enabled

Batman Arkham asylum
Fuel
Gta 4
Juiced 2
Lost planet colonies
Need for speed shift
Operation flashpoint dragon rising
Resident evil 5
and street fighter 4
i dont know if any of these games have havok but i hope it makes my gta better

iv tried gta went straight to auto configure nothing so i moved it all myself till i was 1mb under resource usage with nearly everything on full it ran ok with no lag but i still need to take it back out now n see wot its like without cos i dont know what it was like without it lol

ok so im back on my arse infront of the keyboard jus ran gta with jus the 3870 my smoke i mean x1650 is on the desk infront of me lookin like an eigth of bud cos its the same wiv out it
done some google to find apperently u can mod it or summat to use nvidia drivers but no real explanation or download links so i realy am stumped if any1 knows anything or got any ideas gimme a shout thanks
