My mom's computer suddenly started getting BSOD upon trying to start Windows. I can't even access it in safe mode. She has pictures and whatnot on there that she wants saved so my first thought was to use an Ubuntu live USB stick to access the drive and recover the files... but when I try to open the drive I get this error:

Error mounting /dev/sda1 at /media/ubuntu/542802602802418A: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=999,gid=999,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sda1" "/media/ubuntu/542802602802418A"' exited with non-zero exit status 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error
Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error
NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a
SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows
then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very
important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate
it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g.
/dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation
for more details.

Dead drive?

Could be a failing/failed drive.
I would try putting the drive in a system as a secondary drive (not the boot drive) and see if you can get at any of the data to back it up.

I thought of that, but I thought it would be easier to simply use an Ubuntu live USB stick, burn the files she wants saved, reinstall windows and see what happens.

I would have thought that would work also, Hat, but maybe try a few other options before officially declaring the drive as toast and irrecoverable?

I tried using another drive, installing Windows and looking at it that way as well, no luck there either. Drive has been pronounced dead. Maybe I'll try the freezer trick and see if I can't make it into zombie drive for a short amount of time...

Can SMART be pulled or does it give an I/O error for that too?

Code:
sudo aptitude install smartmontools
sudo smartctl -a /dev/sdX # Replace sdX with your drive.

If you are able to get it working in free-dos, there may be a way to repair it depending on the problem. Is it recognized at all anywhere outside of windows/ubuntu?

I would stop right there. Never give up *nix for DOS anything. Ubuntu is going to offer you a lot more tools and control than free-dos ever will.

of course. But if dos recognises the disk, you might have some luck with dos based tools such as Vivard or spinrite.
