Hello everyone,
I got a new mother board and AMD processor for my old DELL desktop.
MSI B450m mortar max (MS-7B89)
AMD Ryzen 5 3600

Kept everything else the same from old computer.

Now, can't enable UEFI in the bios, if I do that pc does not boot. It says "No GOP (graphics output protocol) detected"

New to this world and would appreciate any help.

(not very technical as well. Please be patient if I reply with a silly question).

Hello.
If i remember well, on your old computer if you installed Windows with no UEFI and you just swapped the HDD or SSD to the new system and you activate UEFI in motherboard BIOS, then windows won't boot.
You must reinstall windows and set it up for UEFI environment.

Sounds like the GPU you are using isn't UEFI compatible. If your GPU isn't old or you are sure its UEFI ready then try updating the BIOS to the latest version.

What video card are you using?

You could also fill in your system specs here-https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/account/specs It will help others to help you.
I've just completed this. Please don't laugh at my video card.

Reinstall windows?? :(
What i did was get a new SSD, install new Windows 10 from a USB flash drive and plug in all my old hard drives.
Does this help??
i am breaking into cold sweat thinking of reinstalling windows.

I doubt my GPU is compatible. How do i check btw?? It's a nVidia Geforce GT220. :p
I believe i got the Dell Vostro in 2011.

I suspected it would be the video card. You should not need a reinstall. Get a eufi compatible GPU and it should work.

No, you don't need to reinstall Windows.
I presumed you just moved your SSD to the new computer.
If you already cleaned install the Windows then no need to do it again.
But as i see you have a non compatible video card.
Need an upgrade.

As impero said, your windows is already is installed in CSM mode. That will continue to work without issues. If you want to move to UEFI then you will need to upgrade the GPU and reinstall windows.

No need for apologies.
We are here to help each other.
The fact is : you must buy even a second hand card (but from a certified dealer) or from ebay as a fully working card.
On ebay if the product is not ok you will receive back the money.
So start search a video card that fit in your budget and that is compatible with UEFI

On the Nvidia side I think from Kepler and newer are UEFI compatible so something like a GT740 or newer would be OK, otherwise OP, if you find something affordable just google for UEFI compatibility before you buy.

Why do you need UEFI? you can live without it. You could spend your money on a new GPU, that certainly need an upgrade, but you don't have to just for UEFI

Hello
I do not know what are the prices in Australia.
But as i know in Europe those cards (brand new sealed) are sold at a price around 500 euro.
So you can make a math.
But for sure i can tell you that RX580 is a reliable video card.

Kepler is UEFI capable but requires a BIOS patch to support it. Maxwell is the earliest NVidia series to support UEFI out of the box.

€500 is about A$785.
I guess I'll have to wait for this pandemic to end?

I suppose you have a generic PSU? If so, it probably can't handle a RX 580. OEM PSU's also usually lack a 6-pin connector, so you might look at GPUs like GT 1030 (weak, but draws only 30w), RX 560, 1050(ti), or 1650 without 6-pin connection.

Edit. I did a quick search, your PSU might be a LiteOn 350w with 6-pin connector, enough for a 1650 super.

Why do you need UEFI? you can live without it. You could spend your money on a new GPU, that certainly need an upgrade, but you don't have to just for UEFI
I suppose I'm just trying to future proof the system as much as possible. In another 3-4 years, I have to start thinking about Windows 11 as well. So, doing as much as possible now to make it last for another 10 years??
I'm just trying to avoid waste here. I understand I could easily buy a new system than to keep upgrading what I have... Let's see. All this could change once Windows 11 rolls out and the computer just wouldn't be compatible... Idk... :)

Kepler is UEFI capable but requires a BIOS patch to support it. Maxwell is the earliest NVidia series to support UEFI out of the box.
Would it be best to stick with AMD graphics card rather than NVIDIA? Just thinking about system harmony (if such a thing exists).

if that's the problem then it's solved, you don't need to worry about it, all the w11 requirements have been bipased already, people have installed it in 10 year old potatos.
