I have been an NVidia fanboy for years, because ATI used to have horrible driver support. After 15 years, I finally broke down and bought an Rx 480. Guess what, the drivers won't install.

The installer runs for a few seconds and then a dialog pops up "Another instance is running". That's it. I really wish I would have gotten a gtx 1060 instead.

This is windows 10 64-bit. MSI armor Rx 480 8GB OC.

I have run DDU multiple times, I've run the cleaner from AMD, I've tried in safe mode and not.

All I get is a little box that says "Another instance is running".

I could rant for another 10 minutes about how unprofessional this is, but can anyone offer help?

Reboot

And download the latest drivers

Typically when you get the "Another instance is running". Its because your not being patent enough. Let the program run and don;t click on it twice

If you would fill out your system specs that would be cool https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/account/specs

Seriously? I've spent the last 4 hours downloading, and cleaning, and rebooting. I'm not running it twice. (sorry, I probably should have calmed down before posting :)

I have the latest drivers. I have the latest "minimal" drivers too (whatever that is).

I'm having flashbacks to 2000 of trying to read model numbers off ATI printed circuit boards. Now I'm going to have to reformat my drive and reinstall windows I suspect.

I should add, if it isn't obvious, that I had an NVidia card installed on the machine. I've run NVidia's cleaner tool too.

Just a thought
Check antivirus disables ,maybe its scanning the files before open and takes its time
Lots of software you download need to be unblock , Right click - Properties - unblock
On Uninstalling , it may ask for reboot . Let it reboot then reboot again after a while ,Could be running a cleanup process after first reboot
If I think Im opening the app twice , I click once then press enter :)

Thanks all.

I was able to install MSI Live Update, which put some kind of drivers on. Not sure if they are up-to-date, but at least it is working at some level.

So will the ATI Suite install now that you did that?

Is windows set to install drivers automatically on reboot? In ddu check tab that stops windows from doing such. That could be the first instance issue.

I have installed 480's in no less than 60 machines with windows 10 64 bit and even on release day drivers not run into this issue...I am betting there is more to this, just like the last AMD driver issue that turned out to be someone using a beta update of windows 10.

I'm sure he had an nvidia mobile chip in that case if it's the one you're thinking of, but I agree with what you're saying in that there's probably something else at play here, I mean apart from the odd driver related issues I've not ever not been able to install drivers.

It looks to me that there is an installer who use the same packer as the AMD installer running with your system and is stuck forever. So I think this your system issue not AMD drivers installer. In other words, AMD drivers installer did a favor to you and pointed out something wrong with your system. If I were you, I will Investigate through task manager and look there closely. I might also do scan my system using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/thankyou/

EDIT:
Since that mysterious installer comes again even after restart, I will also try AutoRuns https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902

I second this. As long as that other installer is working, the AMD one will never get installed.

Last major issues I had with any ATi driver was Catalyst 4.2s, other than that they have been Great, 9700 Pro AIW, 9800 Pro AIW (replacement after I accidentally physically damaged the 9700), x1950 Pro, now this 290. Using WXP then W7.

I ensure the Antivirus is disabled from running/scanning to prevent any funkiness during Driver Installs.

I've also seen how NV drivers don't like to uninstall completely at times, I think they try to force you into the borg/hivemind or something, the guy had a nv card in that's why he is having trouble.

Have you looked in task manager and see if any type of installer is running, or windows service for updates. See what is using system resources in task manager or resource monitor. Check start-up items for any typed of one time installer. Have you tried running a program like malwarebytes? Basically, just start with basic maintenance stuff.

Wow I just mentioned it to cdawall as I thought that's the thread he was referring to but regardless of if it's a potato or not let's not digress and get this thread also closed, really shouldn't have even gotten to that point and by some longer term members as well.....

I just tell it as it is. This thread won't be closed, the other requested it be so I helped him by reporting his post as a request for it to be closed.

Anyways we await what the OP has to say.

I have become convinced that windows has the problem. I think DirectX is messed up somehow. Anyway, it is not the AMD driver installer, and I apologize for disparaging it :)

Go team Red.

Thanks, and you can close this thread (if that means anything)
