Hi guys,

Have just built the following:

i7 930

Gigabyte EX58 UD4P
GeForce GTX 460 1GB
Corsair HX1000 PSU
3x 4GB G Skill Ripjaw 1600MHz DDR3
Kingston 240GB V300 SSD
Samsung SH-222 SATA DVD

When I try to install Windows, it just tells me Windows has encountered a problem communicating with a device connected to your computer. There is nothing connected other than the keyboard.

Instead I tried booting to a Crucial M4 SSD with Windows 7 already on it, and it starts to load the windows flag thing and then crashes and BSOD.

What the hellllllll, I have NEVER built a computer that has just gone straight forward, and this one is no different.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Below is a video of the problem:

If your BIOS SATA is set to IDE change it to AHCI. Or try another SATA cable. The drive might be formatted GPT or UEFI something odd its just cant connect to it

It's set to AHCI already. I tried unplugging the Kingston too and just using the Crucial M4 with a different SATA cable. The keyboard is PS/2 as well to rule out it thinking the USB keyboard was mass storage or something. And I've disconnected the DVD drive so it's not that either. I initially tried to boot with 2 cards in SLI but I removed one and the problem persists so it's not the card.

I have reset all BIOS settings to default in terms of clocks and voltages etc. no change.

Check the bios and make sure your first device to boot is the hard drive (SSD) and not the network (lan) device or other such thing.
Make sure you plug the drive in the blue sata port.

Done all of the above, no change. Swapped the cards over to make sure not a duff card, and changed power leads so it's not that either. There's literally nothing else connected. And the BSOD disappears so quickly it would be impossible to read. Automatic system repair doesn't work either.

Tried IDE mode too, no change.

CPU temp in BIOS is only 42c so it's not that.

Okay so I have now booted onto an old Seagate 7200RPM HDD with Windows XP, that doesn't even belong to this computer and it works just fine.

There is obviously something my computer is not enjoying about having an SSD connected?

Before I did this, I also tried booting with SSD with just one RAM stick instead of 3 and still got BSOD, so it's not RAM either

Zarhdhrfjdhhfh

Any idea what I can do about this? I've tinkered with all the options about AHCI and IDE etc and it makes no difference.

as said above, also update the bios of the motherboard, also id suggest making sure the cpu cooler is properly mounted and nothing is flexing the motherboard, strange issues can be amounted to that and also the ram itself

Hi,
Which sata controller are the drives plugged into?
not sure which controllers the ud4 uses but my ud7 has many.
also it would seem windows does not like some of the board components
I would try disabling the network controller, audio, firewire, usb controllers and sata controllers in the bios
not all at once obviously :)
also definatley update the bios as the gigabyte bios contains sata controller firmware...
hope you get things working...

If the drive was originally formatted with the newer UEFI board. The the X58 will not see it.
So you didn't try that. Format the drive in another PC to MBR then try it

Also if the drive was formatted as IDE it wouldn't boot as AHCI would it?
So you have a couple of things going on here.

I'm installing just plain Windows 7 x64, no service packs.

Also if the drive was formatted as IDE it wouldn't boot as AHCI would it?
So you have a couple of things going on here.

Both SSD drives were already formatted as MBR, and they don't boot as IDE or AHCI. Neither works.

dont expect windows to boot from a mobo swap without uninstalling the hard drive controller at least (i did it before on xp & 98)

WHEN is the installation error coming up? after it starts installing? always at the same moment?

Well I've flashed my BIOS to the latest version, and now I can actually get to the Windows 7 installation screen. However, now I'm trying to install on the Kingston SSD (with AHCI enabled finally), it tells me "Windows cannot be installed in this hard disk space. The partition contains one or more dynamic volumes that are not supported for installation". I don't have another PC I can format this drive on, so I'm hoping there's a way to do it from the installation disk but the option to format or create a new partition are both greyed out. Not sure what to do here...

EDIT: Never mind, did Shift+F10 in the installation screen and used DISKPART and CLEAN commands and it seems to be installing now. Fingers crossed.

I also had problems installing w7 64 on my i7-930.

After installing a w7 32bit. I have used a simulator and tried to install the 64bit version. The thing was that in the simulator BOOT menu the CPU was seen as a 32 bit processor. It would not allow me to install a 32bit OS.
The only way for me was to install a 32 bit version than make an upgrade.

I have had issues with installing OS sice i bought it.
First a ASrock x58 extreme (this died after a while). Now i have the Asus MB, and still I have issues with installing an OS

*i do not own an optical drive, all installs tried were from USB sticks

Specs:
CPU : i7 930 2.8ghz
Ram: 12gb RAM triple channel( 3*4gb kingston )
GPU: HIS hd 5850 1gb ddr5
PSU: Chieftec 750w
MB: Asus p6x58-d

I just bought a Kingston HyperX FURY 120GB for the OS . Will let you know how it all goes.

If that doesn't work it could be the iso you used. I had a problem where I could get win 7 or vista ( can't re member now which one)to install on any of the rigs I had at the time that had Msi boards. It would install fine on other rigs. Tried a different iso and all was good.
