I know what the problem is. It's because XP didn't natively support SATA until SP3 came out. I used to have this problem all the time back in the day when fixing PCs for a living. But I can't for the life of me get it to run on this netbook. I've downloaded the appropriate Intel F6 driver diskette, it still bluescreens after loading the driver. I've tried slipstreaming the drivers into an ISO with nLite, it still bluescreens. Can someone either provide me with an ISO for XP vanilla or SP1 that will load the SATA drivers properly? Maybe SP2 if you think it wouldn't chug like SP3 does. I have a legitimate license for it, I just can't get a working install because of the lack of driver support.

Like I said, I can't use SP3 because it's too bloated for this netbook.

Yeah, this thing doesn't have an SSD. It has an 8GB flash chip with no option for putting in a hard drive or SSD.

is Vista Starter or Home Basic even an option?

If so, maybe that'll save you some effort.

But, that XP project above looks tasty; I will probably give it a try on one of the old laptops laying around! Thanks @natr0n :toast:

It struggles to run XP, trying to run Vista would be like trying to get a wheelbarrow to win an F1 race lol.

Will this potato be used online? :twitch:

I would surely hope not... but the question is, whats the laptops hypothetical use after installation of XP is successful? Maybe if the forum knows this, we could better point to an alternative other than Vista*. :p

*which didnt END its life that badly.. even if it was a shitbox when it arrived.

Nah, the only time it will be online is to use Windows Update, that's it. I like to tinker with these old things and see what I can do with them. If I can get a smooth and stable system running on it, I'll try some games and stuff.

I'd be willing to give the modded XP with SP3 a try from the above link, at this point in your adventure - it seems you dont have much to lose in your quest. :toast:

I've had SP3 running on it already. It chugs like a dog, hence me trying to get SP1 up and running. It's more lightweight.

XP chugs cause of the updates, the custom updated ones fix that issue, and take up less install space overall.

I looked up what the SATA controller was before I started this. I found a document on HP's website about slipstreaming SATA drivers into an XP ISO, and it said that it would only work with SP2. So I tried it with the drivers I'd already been using, this time slipstreaming SP2 into the ISO instead of SP1, and it worked. So I'm guessing the drivers don't work with anything older than SP2. I'll have to see how it performs with SP2 and go from there.

I have windows 10 on my Acer w500's (AMD C60 dual core@1.333mhz, 2gb ram, 32gb m-sata) and it runs fine most of the time, except maybe big updates. Also, you could put Linux on it. I would use it on my Acer's but the touchscreen support is terrible.

This is one of the original netbooks, not only are there no Win10 drivers for it, it would absolutely murder the poor thing. I have tried a few Linux distros, but again they ran like a dog and some things didn't work.
