Car GPS

The Miss wants me to get her GPS for Christmas.. Now, I've been searching around.. But, want input from TPU'ers that have/had GPS's in the past/now.

So, let me know what to look for, and get me a better grasp on the buy.

There's a $200 limit.

Am looking for Lifetime Map at lease. Since it shows, i don't know if I'm right, that Traffic gives advertisements...

I went for the cheap alternative and got an unbranded GPS from China, about say $80-ish. And it does well, considering I'm from Malta and I'm limited for maps, I was surprised that it worked pretty well. I have GPS on my phone and it's relatively the same, just with different software.

I would go for phone GPS, and get her a phone that has it.. But, due to plans, and her wanting cheap.. it doesn't work.. She goes to parts of the US that is limited in "service" to some companies.. So, it's a hard one..

Grab one on Staples for $80.

Then 'find' a coupon for $25 off $75 somewhere and it comes to $60~ after tax and coupon cost.

I picked one up for the my tenants downstairs, since they're new immigrants and wanted to... walk around with it.

Yeah, in-car Sat Navs seem to be about the same quality as mobile phone ones, although there are some area's where one is better then the other.

They're also no where near as useful as some people make them out to be, in 9/10 situations you need to know the post code of where your going if you want to end up anywhere near it

we have two TomTom GPS's they seem to work well,been to texas twice in the last 3 months

I have noticed that garmin seems to be the one to give out free map updates for life

I've had a TomTom and a Garmin. In fact my TomTom is so old, it looks like an old CRT TV, well it has that shape, it is from before TomTom started making flat units. I switched to a Garmin for a while to try it out, and it completely sucked compared to the TomTom.

TomTom does offer lifetime map and traffic updates on a lot of their units now.

This is the one I would get if I was buying today:
TomTom XL 350TM 4.3" GPS Navigation with Lifetime ...

The Nuvi 40LM has lifetime maps, but that one comes out to $10 more. It's on Staples.
