Card Freezes when over clocked to 500 Mhz?

I've got an Daimond S120 Radeon 9550 With 256 MB DDR Ram, which is supposed to be a X8 AGP aperture, but only workd as a X4, I dunno what going on there, tut hats not my main question (I would like that one answered though...) My main question is, My Card freezes up when ever I overclock it to 500 MHz, and I want to know why. It works fine at 480 Mhz, and isn't overheating, in fact, it doesn't get very hot at all... So why does it freeze at 500 Mhz? I've taken off the ATI OCing lock, and I've also taken off the safety range. I don't know whats going on...

its at its limit on the volts it has to the core

What is stock core clock? Also regarding the 8x issue, which board are you running it on?

Heat isn't the only reason a card would be unstable. The voltage that is feeding the core probably isn't high enough to allow a higher clock speed.

And as for the X4 vs. X8, with that card it won't matter. However, the card might be limitted by the motherboard. Some motherboards only allow X4.

Edit: The stock clock is only 250MHz, so you are nearly doubling that, which is damn good. The highest card ever released with the same core as the 9550 was the 9600Pro, and it came with a stock clock of 400MHz, so you are already way past that.

I'm not entirely sure what type of motherboard I have. All I know is that the system is a Dell Dimension 8200 With 400 MHz Front Side bus.

Oh, and the stock core clock is 250 MHz, though the GPU is the same as a 9600 so, it should be at 300 Mhz

I am bothered by the fact that my board will only allow my card to go up to X4, is there any way I can force it to X8?
If not, any recommendations on a new motherboard?

Well, your power supply is proprietary, and the board uses RDRAM. If you switch it out you do realize you will need a new case, power supply and possibly ram as well right?

I figured I would have to, yes. I already have a 550 Watt Power supply, RAM is not that expensive, usually, but I didn't know I would need a new case.
Do you think switching out my Power supply with the 550 Watt would allow the card to do more? Or is is JUST the card?

Too many variables involved. Airflow in case being one. Yes possible but I doubt.

EDIT: Only reason i mentioned the case is that you may not be able to fit the new power supply or the new motherboard in the current case.

I have plenty of Case fans. I have a really powerful one as my Main Exhaust fan, and a secondary one down (Taped) on the bottom, and I have some of the from panelling off, so that it can suck the air right through the entire Machine. When I open the case, it's never very hot in there. So, if the voltage is as high as it can go, does anyone have any recommendations on a card?

Well, my actual motherboard doesn't support the power supply anyways, so I will need a new motherboard sooner or later. I'm actually thinking about just buying a new computer. Which would solve all of these problems, Hehe.

But for the time being, I will ask if any of you know a good (Cheap) card that will play Crysis on Low with at LEAST 20 FPS
Thats pretty specific, I know, but you can generalize it a bit.
Otherwise, I don't need any more help, Unless anyone knows if there is a way to Force the MOBO to allow AGP 8X

If your mobo has a max of 4x, then there is no way to make it go higher...it's not possible. As for a card, I would recommend a HD2600 or HD3850 AGP. Problem is, the processor and 4xAGP will severely limit performance. You may need more RAM as well, and if your RAM is not DDR, it can be mighty expensive. I would recommend, if you really wana play Crysis, build a rig with Pentium Dual-Core, 2GB Value-Ram, Semi-Cheap Mobo, and a 3850/3870 for like $300.

Probably nothing in the AGP 4x market.. if there still is one..

but will be limited to 4x.. and I'm sure he won't get much more performance due to his CPU limitation, so it defeats the purpose and is basically a waste of money..

Yeah, my computer is crap. But again, I am planning on building, or at least having on customized online, and I will take these cards into consideration. But I'm can't really do it right now until I get more money, I just wanted to know if I could get the card to be better, and It's apparent, that I cannot. Which sucks, but oh well. I'll just have to mooch off people to give me free stuff that is better than mine Hehe.

Yeah, you can build a nice rig off newegg with approx $400. Where's newtekie when you need him most, he has a wish list pre-made.
