So I plan on building a dedicated gaming rig and I plan to upgrade to 1440p or 1600p. I was thinking about buying a stellar 780 TI. But for the same price I can run two stellar 770s. Which would do better at either resolution? I don't plan on running any older titles so I don't think sli should be an issue. The oldest game I might run is Fall Out 3.

W1zzard does reviews for 1600p. Might want to check them out! I'd steer clear of using 2gb cards for that resolution though.

at that extra rez, you want to get card with extra ram, 780ti 6gb (if they make it) or gtx770 with 4gb ram each. it will help with better more stable FPS on games. Could go with pair of 6gb 780's as well would cost little more but. Another thing to keep in mind since new 800 series card from nvidia are rumored due some point this year, could be few months or nov/dec there is no date yet.

W1zzard has been reviewing the 780 6gb variants and have pretty much made it clear that the 6GB does not benefit the card in anyway.
  • Extra memory doesn't improve performance
The performance boost is mostly coming from the clock increases. 6gb 780Ti are not available yet, though I do know EVGA has some coming. I doubt 6gb on the 780Ti will help much as well. Also 4GB 770s have no benefit over 2GB cards unless put in SLI. This goes for pretty much any card with vram increase over the original model.

My recommendation to the OP is a R9 290/x or 780Ti

I was looking are the 4gb 770s. I just wasn't sure if a single 780 TI had the horsepower to do it. And I've always read the 6gb 780 TI is the Titan Black.

Not exactly, but I guess.

Id rather have 2 290 non x cards then 770s.

That's kinda what I'm starting to think. I didn't know if there were really any down side to going with amd. Like tessellation, hbao +, fxaa and all those other features. I'm guess and can do the important ones? And I'm debating about the shield tablet.

Look at erockers perf summary table. The 690 matches the 7990 and only has 2gb ram per GPU.
Vram takes a back seat to GPU power, as such. Single card, yes, makes a diff, but two 770's are effectively a GTX690.

That kinda what I was thinking. I'm thinking the high horsepower route. But amd could fill all my needs. I feel dirty thinking about getting their cards. But crossfire 290 or 290x would be gg

I use my MSI 290X Lightning @ 1440 and it's a champ - high fps in BF4 on Ultra with tweaked driver settings for even more eye candy :) definitely would recommend that or a 780 maybe 780Ti as I think the 780 is the better deal - get one with a good cooler like the 780 Gaming (Twin Frozr cooler) that TPU reviewed

Mine has no problems at 1600p

My TI boosts to around 1250 MHz, and out scores most 690's in 3d mark

You could just wait a few months for the new cards which will probably focus more on higher resolutions. You seem to have a pretty good rig already. Either way, as much as I want to pick up a new card, I'm sticking with my 7970 until the end of the year.

Personally if it comes to price to performance in the 1440p+ areas its normally associated right now as being more than possible on a single card in the top tier categories. The GTX 780/ti and R9 290/X are the best in this category if your planning on doing some extreme resolution gaming with good settings in game (Normally high+).

If you want price to performance, the best choice is a pair of 290's as they go for around 400 a piece and offer stock performance of a 780 (Or according to erockers chart above) and cost less. I would recommend that if you want a pair of GPU's and do not want to spend a ton as you would be hard pressed to get rid of them for the next couple of years at a standard 1440p resolution in gaming.

As far as ram is concerned, get a card with at least 3gb of ram. There are things that use around 3gb of ram at that resolution already (Or run pretty close) and with new generation games coming for next gen we are going to see increases in ram usage which 2gb will start struggling at higher resolutions/FPS setups.
