Actually the 2GB models are more often unlockable, as they are identical to the 6970. However, many 1GB models also unlock.

It has been proven that some non reference cards unlock, but there are no guarantees.

It's a gamble buddy, no one can tell you for sure.

From some of the reviews, its a 50/50 shot of unlock on this card.

Are all 6950s 50/50? or is there a brand that has a better success rate? Also, can anyone link the method/procedure for attemping to either fully unlock or shader unlock the 6950. I plan to buy this card today.

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
There is a HUGE thread on this site covering the procedure...

You have seen people's experiences on unlocking and 6 months ago, your chances were pretty darn good. Now not so much. So if you want a 6970, buy one. But if you get a 6950, expect just that, a 6950.

Im getting a 6950 and expect a 6950. I always expect the product that I pay for. I never base it off whether I can get extra juice out of it. But if I can, bonus. Just like my i5 2500k, i bought it to run at 3.2ghz and not 4+. I was able to overclock it to 4.3ghz and it's a nice bonus.

I just want to know if it's still possible and it seems that unlocking to a 6970 is very very low with a high risk now. The safest and most successful way is to just unlock the shaders and then overclock to 6970 speeds.

The safest way is to not do it at all. Part of the issue is that even the shaders are not unlocking these days.
