Another site I was moderator of has a Java chat room where members can just join and chat. I was wondering why we don't have something like that here? My other site has about 220,000 members, I don't see why this site can't have one. It would be really helpful to a lot of members who can get help in real time. I know people respond to threads here nearly instantly sometimes, but its still nice to be connected with a chat room filled with people discussing a variety of things. I have to imagine this has been suggested before, so I assume it was thought about and denied already in the past...but I wonder why? It seems like such a great idea, and this is the right kind of site to make good use of a chat room.

Wouldn't a nice Java chat with a "Chat" button located up where...

"techPowerUp! User CP FAQ New Posts Search Quick Links Log Out"

...is be a better way to spread awareness and get more people using it? I mean I just found out there was a chat, and I don't even know where you saw the link to get to it. If it was more easily accessible more people might use it.

Like right now were having a nice conversation in General Discussion, it would be nice if we could all sit in a chat room and just type to each other rather than make post after post. Or when I'm helping someone with an issue, its nice to have the ability to talk in a chat rather than make post after post. I realize posting is nice, because when other people have issues they can read about it too. But having a chat isn't going to take away from the benefits of posting. Its not like the tens of thousands of members here are gonna pack a chat room and stop making threads and helping each other.

Not likley, we've been through this several times before. It's used for a day or two then everyone goes back to their own IM's, chats, viops etc.

No offense, but how would you know? You registered in December.

Thing is, we eventually made a chatroom, people were in it for a few days and it didn't get used ever again. Like Waz said it came up again, same thing. With the last site change it got placed under misc as nobody used it. If we fix it now it'll be empty again within a week.

Here
And here
And here
And here
And here
And here

Quick search for chat comes up with people who did find it. There should also be a big discussion about people wanting a chatroom somewhere. Too lazy to search more. Though the fact that you haven't seen it is because you haven't looked.
It used to be on the front page, clear to be seen. However I agree it's hidden now, which doesn't matter since it's broken :)

I think thats a pretty mean thing to say, so he's only been here two months therefore he's too stupid to find the chat link? I've been here almost a year and I never heard of it either. On other forums where the chat button is clearly on the top along where

techPowerUp! User CP FAQ New Posts Search Quick Links Log Out

is, its pretty easy to find and because of that people use it. And like I said, people sitting in a chat room talking isn't going to result in less posting. The chat would be nice even if it doesn't become mainstream, if someone wants to ask a series of questions to get answered right away whats the harm in that? I know that when I post a bunch of questions, the replies I get tend to focus on just one of the questions. Also it only takes 2 or 3 people to have an interesting conversation in a chat room, we don't need hundreds of members in there.

I just don't understand the moderator's seemingly negative attitudes when it comes to the chat. It seems broken now, I can't even find the link to it anywhere. Why can we just leave an easily accessible link to a chat at the top of the page to a working chat and let people use it if they want to?

No, I'm saying he wasn't here when it was right there on the frontpage. You should have seen it, it was in the main menu in the previous site design.

Like I said, I agree it is hidden now. Then again since it doesn't work anyway it doesn't really matter.

The negative attitude of the mods is simple, once it's made working it'll be used for a week and never been heard of again. Just like the last 2 times we tried.

I don't understand how fixing it and making it work is such a big deal...

Who cares if no one will use it after a week?

Is it really that big of a deal?
