Not much of a gamer here; but the kids play the Lego series games and I play a few games like WOT, WOT Blitz and War thunder.

What is the cheapest 4k GPU for light gaming on med to med low settings i can get away with?
I'm ok at setting to 1080p on most games on the 4K TV; But some games keep defaulting to 4K 30HZ and
it becomes unplayable on the RX 550 4GB card I have in there. Will a RX580 8GB do med settings ok at 4k?

Dang, I was hoping that the 580 could do it for used $100 on Ebay...

Thanks bud,

$250 is the cheapest I'm seeing; a tad to high for my budget....

Cheap and 4K don’t go together at all

You’d have a better experience with a Xbox or PlayStation playing 4K

Yep, even on low/med it takes some GPU horsepower to drive it. Gotta pay to play at 4K. ;)

I have a RTX 2070 and even in some games it struggles at 4K unless I drop details

GPUs just don’t have enough horsepower to push 4K unless you get a RTX 2080 Ti

That depends on your goals... If you want High/Ultra with AA and 60+ FPS. Then you are correct. If you can make a couple of IQ sacrifices (like disabling or lowering AA) than a 2080 is a plenty capable 60 FPS card at 4K.

For the OP who is requesting low/medium, a 2070 would be fine or even 5700xt.

Probably better to wait a few years; then see how the 4K gaming experience is going.

after reading a few things; I guess you can force steam to launch at 1080 instead of 4k that WOT blitz is defaulting too?
The Lego games work great and look pretty good when rendering at 1080; no noticeable lag even on that lowly RX550. I was surprised actually .....

On a side note, I may just install regular WOT; Blitz is limited in a lot of options...

Thanks all,

I got V64 and can't complain much about 4K gaming :) Of course it depends on the game and sometimes tweaking graphics is necessary but in general I'm going 4K :)

I went with a RX570 8GB that I found on Ebay for $80
That should do it at 1080p on med-high settings for the games I play.
Still haven't figured out how to get the TV to stop switching to 4k.
Weird crap; I did figure out how to get it to go to 60hz instead of 30hz by resetting the settings
on the AMD utility.

By the way; I hate the format and wish catalyst was back. I cant navigate my way through the new one...

Are you confident that your monitor can do 4K 60Hz, What type of cable are you using? Not that the GPU could handle that but if you were looking for a good card Vega 56 cards should satisfy that itch. Used ones should be a bit cheaper now that NAvi has been released and approved by most reviewers.

My 290x gives playable FPS on low settings in most games. Some it's good enough for higher settings so a 570 should do the same, 580 a couple of frames more.

Ahh, because, people want to play at 4K with minecraft like settings...

Clearly that is being dramatic, but the difference is incredibly noticeable. Part of the reason to play on 4K is to see the details, not get rid of them just to play. ;)

290x and 4K is cute.

RX 570 will run fine these lightweight games that you quoted in 4K @ med ~ high.

I'd be looking at RX 5700, RTX 2060 Super, RTX 2070, and RX 5700 XT.

1080 Ti can handle about 85 fps and the above cards have just under that performance so should be good to go.

Yes ,eTV does support 60HZ, yes I did buy a new 2.0b cable to make sure; but the original cable was
fine. I got it to work by restoring default settings in GPU utility of the RX550. the 30hz switched to 60HZ

would like to get a Vega 56 or 64 but my budget was $100 or under. I got the RX570 8GB for $80+$10 shipping.
I'm a serious gamer; just play 1-3 nights A week so I didn't want to spend a lot of money

I'll play on Low- settings for the games that keep switching my tv to 4K and the rest on 1080p.
The 570 should do until we get some mid range cards that can handle 4K in the future.

it has 4 HDMI inputs 2 at 4K 30HZ 2 @ 4K 60HZ

For that even RX580 8GB or GTX1060 6GB would do the trick. I'm mostly playing older games, and most are quite playable at 2K or 4K resolution.
WoT will probably work as high as maxed out settings @4K with either one of those cards.

Adding a few data points from my experience:
  • I haven't played World of Tanks, but I had no issues playing World of Warships at 4K at over 60fps with maximum settings on my overclocked GTX980Ti (~GTX1070 performance).
  • I was able to run Stellaris maxed out at 5K (5K, not 4K, this is not a typo) with a R9 Fury.
  • I ran Battletech at max settings at 5K with my GTX980Ti at around 30-40FPS, which is perfectly fine for a turn-based tactics game.
  • I could max out Cities:Skylines with a ton of mods on the same R9 Fury as well at 4K.
There are plenty of games out there that look pretty good and aren't all that hard to push to 60FPS even at 4K. For such titles on medium settings a RX580 8GB should be doable.

MY ADVICE is to setup the resolution for the DESKTOP to 1920x1080 (1080p) and leave the DPI scaling at default which I assume is 1x... you can either set the AMD control panel to scale on the GPU and scale by ASPECT or choose scale by MONITOR/TV... by default it scales by the Monitor/TV so it would send the 1920x1080 image to the HDTV... now, if there's a "Game Mode" in the HDTV settings for that exact input you want that on... barring that there may be some way to drop certain post-processing settings for the input in the HDTV settings to reduce input lag due to processing.

So again, if you set the resolution to 1920x1080 (may show as 1080p for HDTV) in Windows then it should just scale to fit the screen. Not as SHARP as on 4K but then you were setting to 1920x1080 in-game anyway so it should be identically processed. You just won't have the option to choose a higher resolution for a game.

I'd be looking at RX 5700, RTX 2060 Super, RTX 2070, and RX 5700 XT.

1080 Ti can handle about 85 fps and the above cards have just under that performance so should be good to go.
You did see the part where the OP explicitly says they want to play relatively lightweight games at low-to-medium settings, right? Those benchmarks are run at Ultra, and mostly heavy titles. That's a night and day difference. An RX 580 ought to handle what the OP wants just fine.

Not necessarily directed at the quote above, but I always find it funny how a lot of PC enthusiasts see lowering IQ settings as some sort of sacrilege, to the degree that it even seems to filter out when they read. I've seen it quite a few times before, and I doubt this will be the last.

I have an RX 590 and I see hiccups on games at 1920x1200. RX 580 isn't a good choice for 4K.

I think the absolute best choice right now is the RX 5700 because you can use GPU Scaling + Radeon Image Sharpening (RIS) to get you up to 4K with little loss in quality. It's probably the best all around bang for the buck 4K card right now because of RIS.

If you can't afford an RX 5700 (MSRP $350), then use that chart above as a guide. The closer you get to RX 5700, the better your experience will be.

Playing at 4k and lowering settings is retarded.
Playing at 1080p and lowering settings makes sense due to high refresh rate monitors.
The only reason to play at 4k is for image quality.
