Checkerboard Display RX570

I recently bought a new Asus RX 570 Strix graphics card to upgrade from the integrated Vega 8 graphics I was using.

First time I put the card into the pcie slot, the screen seemed to be turning on, but the image was just black. Thinking that it was a PSU problem (cause I was using some cheap power supply), I bought a thermaltake 700w PSU. Disconnected all the cables from the last supply and connected the new one, still the same thing. I was already getting frustrated, so I RMA'd the card, waited 2 weeks just to see that my RMA was rejected. I was confused at first but then I thought that maybe the mobo was faulty, so I consulted with some people that worked in the tech industry and they advised me to RMA the mobo and get a new one in the meantime. I did just that. I got a MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max mobo. So I disassembled the computer put everything on the new mobo, did some troubleshooting and sure enough it posted.

And so I download the latest drivers for the GPU and I get a checkerboard display (you can see an example for what it looks like in the attached image). It occured in the amd software and in games, but in benchmarks it didn't happen. What happens is: I get into a game and after some time the checkerboard pattern appears, and then the monitor loses connection to the GPU, and then it turns back on. When the the display turns back on, the game and the AMD software app (if it was open at the time) are closed.

So I try going back to outdated drivers, since I know that the AMD drivers can be kind of janky when they are newer. I first go back to 20.1.3. (I used DDU), it worked a little better than before, because I could actually run games and play them but occasionally the same thing would happen. So I go even older 19.12.1 (since I saw on the forums that it was most stable), It was a tiny bit better but still the same thing kept reoccuring. So I thought that a clean install of Windows 10 would do the trick but still nothing different.

From what I saw on other threads, the VRAM on the card might be faulty, but since my RMA attempt got rejected I'm kind of doubting it's the card, although everything is pointing at the GPU to be the culprit.

Note: For some reason when I run The Witcher 3 the problem doesn't occur at all, but then after maybe an hour of playing Witcher I start up (for example) Hades (a considerably less demanding game) and then the checkerboard appears.

My system:
-MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max
-AMD Ryzen 2200g
-Asus RX 570 Strix OC
-16 GB DDR4 2666 MHz
-Thermaltake Smart RGB 700w
-ADATA 240 GB SSD

Thanks in advance to everyone that tries to help.

definitely looks like faulty vram to me, why did your RMA get refused? did you send the card back? did it get tested?

So far you've had a new motherboard and PSU and it is still persisting, I have only ever seen this issue caused by faulty vram chips and I'm 99% sure the GPU is faulty

Where are you from and where did you buy it from/RMA it to?

I'd agree with this assessment. This is exactly the behavior I'd expect from failing VRAM. In fact I've experienced his behavior twice with failing VRAM. If the manufacturer is being stubborn about RMA, I suggest being a royal PITA until they commit to rectifying the situation if the card is still under warranty.

take the screen shot and the GPU back to where you bought it from and demand a refund or replacement

My first RMA probably got rejected cause the first problem was that it wouldn't even post.

And the store I bought the GPU is pretty well known in my country, so it's not shady.

Will probably try RMA-ing the card in the next few days.

I will keep you updated.

why not take it back to the store instead of RMA does your country not have some sort of robust consumer guarantee act

I've downgraded my drivers once again back to 19.12.1 and now, games don't get a checkerboard display as much (happened once in three days), but when I'm watching something on Youtube it occurs way too often, even though it didn't happen before. So I'm just curious why changing drivers makes the problem occur in different situations?

Coming back to report after some time. The RMA got rejected again, so I'm having doubts. I sunk too much timeinto this problem that I'm just gonna RMA the card again and again until the company lets up. They probably did not listen when I told them what to do to recreate the problem, so I guess they just ran some benchmarks saw no problem and called it a day. Will be reporting back if the issue is resolved.
