Well here how's it stands:
ATM I got three 580s. Two are vanilla, one with accelero xtreme on top of it they are set in 3-way sli.
I have a chance to swap them for two 6990s, and possibly get 150$ along with them.
Question is : should I ?

I would still do it. Unless you're folding, you are getting more power and $150. I see absolutely no reason not to jump on it.

personally I'd sell 1 and keep the other 2. The thrid card for sli is going to have tiny gains over 2 and you'll mget well over 400$ if you sell it.

or see how much 3x 6970 would be. liekly the 3x 6970 would best the 3x 580's and 2x 6990's due to how well they scale compared to nvidia and simply how poor the 6990 performed compared to the single gpu variant.


results at 5:15, note the minimum frames. not quete the same but gives you an idea.

Thing is -> the test was made on 11.3 drivers, and many ppl posted different results ( way better results) on overclock.net. And even HardCop did a quad vs quad review in may and they got waay better results too ( as a matter of fact quad 6990 owned quad 590, and when compared to tri-sli review they made two weeks before that , 6990 benches are still better overall)

Nah, thread closed. Didn't go for it, after a lot of thought I came to the conclusion that a full crossifreX support in majority of new games that will be spawning like crazy during this fall/winter ( Rage, Skyrim, BF3, Batman AC, Assassin's Creed Rev., etc) will be going back and forth and it worst case scenarios it will have "Witcher 2" symptom when it was unplayable on 6990s for almost a month. Given the fact that 7970 looks amazingly impressive ( based on the rumors, and tech. characteristics that leaked), I would wait for them, since they comming out during winter. I bet three of those will win over 580s AND 6990s with their XDR2 memory + less power consumption. Although I have to admit ... 495$ for 6990 a pice is amazing price and I drooled over it...if only my 14yo brother could swap a card... ( yeah he doesnt know how .... ugh) I would swap my 4th 580 from his PC and shuvved one 6990 in it for tests...but since we're 1k miles away now, I would not dare to present him with such an expensive hardware >_>.

I would have gone with the 6990's, and that's just to answer your question without additional input or opinion. The performance increase and value alone is amazing.

Ideally I would go triple 6970's over triple 580's to save the money and win in performance. I have two 6970's and I play triple screen 5760x1080 and it's plenty performance.

Why are you running tri-580's in the first place, out of curiosity?
