Choosing a 1070!

I think either one you go with will be a good choice. They both are going to be about the same noise wise. The STRIX offers a few more features, but is a little more expensive, so you have to ask if those features are worth it to you. Personally, I like the look of the STRIX better, so I'd go with it. I'd turn the LEDs off completely, and just enjoy the black look.

return policy here sucks balls, but if the MSI has whine i'll return it for the asus. This is why i want the local store - i know the staff and can get away with a same day return for a different model.

my 970's have coil whine, but only in SLI and only when FPS goes above 100 (so loading screens, menus etc. another of the reasons to go single GPU)

Not any coil whine from my MSI 1070 X. MSI uses very high quality chokes and capacitors on the X and Z series. I would look for a quiet solution because the NVidia boost will lower clocks with temperature (and I am not talking about the maximum temperature limit). I have a couple of profiles for my 1070 X setup. One custom fan curve to hit maximum rpm at about 55c, the other to run at 55% fan (which is pretty much silent).. That gives me a good consistent boost and it is still quiet. So I get around 2050 MHz GPU clock and 9150 MHz effective clock speed. These are over time running under load. If you see others getting 2100+ MHz, it is either not over time gaming, and even if it was, it makes a fraction of a fps difference. So cool, consistent and quiet.

BTW, Afterburner will work with any card. So will EVGA Precision X. So hat is not a reason to purchase one over the other.

MSI gaming X is stupidly quiet. 1080p 60hz gaming the fan doesnt even turn on (at 4k, lighter games it still doesnt)
Power consumption is clearly lower than my SLI setup, idle and load.
MSI gaming software is poop. Changing the LED colour locks my mouse cursor and things behave rather odd, as well as random lag and issues. Good thing afterburner is seperate.

Hmmmm I was going to say something against you getting a 1080 for more money but then again you run 4k. If you managed to get a 1070 with samsung ram, they can be overclocked to within a hairline of 1080 performance.

Micron GDDR5X, if it matters. Card runs at 2063 core, 5063 ram after a few minutes screwing around in afterburner.

I get that you're happy with your new purchase? It's good that you had the option of going for a 1080. In my area a 1080 costs almost 300 euros more than a 1070 and it's just not worth it.

This is exactly what I was afraid of and I'm glad that I didn't even try to install the software in the first place.

And I'm sitting here with Gainward Phoenix huge ass cooler same size fans as MSI I'f I'm not wrong. really silent in gaming. Cant remember from what I got RAM. Wanted to try new brand + cheaper as well. I'm not disappointed. only cons what can I say are comparing to msi that it's x2 size of MSI and utillity design.

I still voted for the MSI one anyway but found that Asus one for the same price was all.

Yes, the price will drop(VEGA), but each must see for his self how much worth the card is to you. And some people don´t mind "losing" a 150bucks if that means they can play their games 2 months earlier.

in my case, it was 'if i upgrade, i can sell a few PC's off for people who want a christmas PC for their kids'

worked out well, covered the cost of the GTX 1080 already. lack of coil whine and getting fast Vsync back soooooooo worth it.

yeah well i used it, loved it, and no one told me it didnt work with SLI - even SLI enabled but a game set to single GPU wont work.
