Hi everyone, so the time has come for me to look for a new graphics card. In a couple of weeks I am travelling to US (NYC and DC) for a holiday and I plan to get a graphics card over there where it is way cheaper - probably from newegg. The hotel does accept deliveries for patrons so it's all good on that level.

If I do buy a graphics card over there I'm only really looking at Asus as I have an Asus service centre about a 30 min drive from me and is on the way to Brisbane on the days I commute there. They do honour international products as I got my G53 I bought in HK fixed there where the motherboard had a failure. I don't want to mail back the graphics card if it doesn't work, hence why I only want to get an Asus branded card in the US.

My maximum budget is $540USD if I buy a card over there.
So the cards I'm looking at over there are;

the Asus DC2OC GTX780 - which I will probably get if there aren't any AIB designed coolers for the r9 290 out by the time I get over there. Also on all the reviews I've seen, it overclocks like a beast.

and also the R9 290 which I would prefer to get for the performance as it does considerably better than the 780 in BF4 but I could not live with the heat and noise and I don't want to change the cooler on it.

If I were to buy the graphics card here, the GTX 780 is out of the question as it is too expensive here. The cheapest one I would consider is $630 for the Gigabyte windforce one. http://www.umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=4
I would end up getting an R9 290 here which seem to be between $470-$520 depending on the brand. I'm open to whatever brand here.

So if I decided not to buy over in the US, I would probably wait out till the 290 came out with an AIB designed cooler here.

I do play CoH2 as well and I read somewhere that AMD cards do terribly in that game. But I am leaning toward the 290 for price/performance, only the noise/heat is killing it for me.

Which one????

If you had a problem with the card, would the US warranty be honoured in AUS though?

for Asus yes. I've called the service centre and that is fine.

780 because Australia is pretty hot (unless you have a ton of money to blow on air conditioning/you can find another cooler to slap on). If there is a good air cooler out (DCII etc.) get the 290 instead.

I'd suggest wait for the non-reference 290s, they should be out in about a week or so I think. A 290 or 290x with the Direct CU II cooler would be so much win.

Why not a 7990?

Its it basically two 280X's in CF for a lower price than you would pay for both cards. Plus i can match the 690 in most games.

I am an Nvidia fanboy, but your choice depending on games which you wanna play. If its pro gaming or some mmo/shooter gaming, a specially from blizzard like sc2/wow/diablo/ heroes of storm(new boss moba game) you are have no choise but to buy gtx 780, becouse nvidia performs quite better then amd in that kind of games (fps, stability, latency and other...).
Next reason is G-sync... amd - and you'll regret when g-sync monitors came out....
3-rd reason is silence, amd cards have more tdp - more noisy cooler work.
Anyway, if you wanna best, smoothest, quietest and stable graphic experience - go for asus gtx 780 and don`t bother yourself.

Nvidia only if you dont want hard noisy days with unexpected surprises. Asus gtx 780 and your life is going to be easy .
Hard days ? i got 5870 in crossfire and never had problems. (OVER 4~5 Years)

initial batches of AMD R9 290X HAVE BEEN BOXED AS 290'S... go for a VTX290 and flash it when you get home...

when the new cards come they will all be boxed properly and all be laser cut...
