Basically i have an issue where chrome is running slower than I would think it should be...i am an excessive tab user, i have about 150 tabs open across 5 windows right now.

I just want to know if anyone else with a high end pc, who is also a tab hoarder has this issue also.

Specs:

E5 2695 V3
48GB 2133
512GB NVME M.2 SSD
RX 480 8GB

Facebook is a killer in chrome. with 4 tabs open (facebook being one of them) my chrome gets up to around 4gb of usage and gets super laggy.

At work, I usually only have about 50-100 tabs open, but can confirm slowdowns on decently spec'd PCs. I have two suggestions.

One, try disabling any adblock-like extensions. I switched to Ghostery when AdBlock slowed things down too much, but have noticed huge slowdowns on occasion with Ghostery too.

Two, sometimes you'll get tabs that just eat memory like no other, which will slow Chrome down even if you still have plenty of memory available. Hit Shift+Esc to bring up Chrome's task list and then kill (and reload) any tabs that are taking tons of memory. Keep in mind that some This usually gives me a huge boost. Often I'll find that tabs like Facebook or Gmail use up tons of memory and will slow down other tabs until killed.

For example, here's mine now. You can see that Facebook is taking up ~600MB of memory as is Gmail. Some of the sites I use at work will crawl up over 1GB for that single tab.

Killing these pages will turn the tab in to something that says this:

upload_2017-1-2_16-45-15.png

Hit reload on those and check memory usage again. Should be significantly reduced.

Windows Task Manager will show the Google Chome processes themselves, but the Task Manager in Chrome will show you the individual pages under it. It can be found in the screenshot below.

That being said, the Windows Task Manager does show us that the biggest container is only up around ~600MB, which isn't terrible. Does restarting Chrome speed it up at all? If not, it could just be extensions or Chrome just not playing nicely with having that many tabs regardless of system specs.

you got to many tabs open it doesn't matter how fast the pc is chrome has a basic limit and that isn't much more then 50 -75 tabs or so depending on page content and what extensions you have running

Doesn't really solve the problem.

I mean, I use Waterfox too, but even I won't claim it'll open 150 tabs no prob. That's the issue, not browser preference.

here's a genius solution, how bout you close some of yo tabs man, lol. but on a real note, try switching browsers. i find that edge to be pretty good at managing resources better than chrome and firefox.

Well I'm not surprised....

And I wouldn't call that "high-end".

Just use less tabs, what use does it have anyway with 150 tabs open, you can't see all pages at the same time anyway..

And I wouldn't call that "high-end".
It isn't the best gaming box, but it is extremely high end in terms of CPU power.

Firefox slow down significantly too with lots of tabs open. Get up to 80+ and it's all downhill.

Since I imagine you probably keep the browser open a long time (given the amount of tabs), do you by chance use sleep/standby with Chrome and it's tabs still running? I had a similar issue recently, disabling hybrid sleep seems to have helped. I'm guessing the tabs were sort of "discarded" to shrink the hibernate sys file. The tabs would load very slowly after resuming the operating system.

I had a similar issue recently, disabling hybrid sleep seems to have helped. I'm guessing the tabs were sort of "discarded" to shrink the hibernate sys file. The tabs would load very slowly after resuming the operating system.
Setting Firefox to only load the tab when it's clicked on helps greatly with this as only the current tab reloads. The cost of course, is that the page has to download again which is fun if the page has been removed/inaccessible or the site is down.

Stop using Chrome, Firefox, Netscape etc. Just use Edge and call it a day.

When I ran into this problem a couple of months ago, this addon "Tabs Outliner" helped me out bigtime.
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tabs-outliner/eggkanocgddhmamlbiijnphhppkpkmkl

Adblocks in general are one big cause of slowdown, handling my tabs with Tabs Outliner it's now under control.
Also, I used to be a big fan of old Opera until v12 (native tab stacking, customizability, speed) and just recently found something from the same roots. It is called Vivaldi, coming from the former CEO of Opera.

Me too, someone told me it had built-in free VPN now so I installed the latest version a week ago and it works.

It's quite possible one of the websites you have open is itself is slowing things down. Does this happen after having a certain amount of tabs open? Will this issue happen if you have 150 tabs open to relatively lightweight sites?
