I also believe reviewers should be called out for being complicit in what these companies are pushing.

I find it funny that no one in here wanted to reply.

yt "influencers" are a big problem. they play it off like theyre the viewers friends but they are turned salesmen by the companies. the get freebies, get paid, get invited to PR events. they are there as a business. Ive never used patreon and never bought an item based on a sponsored link.

I also feel theres always fake agendas like what theyre doing with amd gpu now. many are not happy with nvidia at this state were in. they have a high market share, screw users with crazy high prices but many who are nvidia fanboys and always neg on amd are now making amd gpu like its the best thing since sliced bread videos because there is no choice. im not talking about if amd gpu are good or bad but they are all trying hard to push people to amd not because the 9070xt is amazing, as it too is thieving with prices but because otherwise things will go down the shets for pc users. theyre trying hard to balance back market share to amd. I hope intel wake up and bring their C 770 16gb soon.

every YTuber has his own personal interest. majority are fake and have their pocket in mind. I agree that nvidia is a scumbag in every regard but sensationalism and self interest is where its at with YTubers. there are maybe a handful of objective legit channels. maybe 2-3 I can think of

I know gamers nexus is definitely a sensationalist channel, who do their videos for their own wallet, but imo, they are the closest to being the peoples champions and arent scared to rip into companies. like they did with asus nzxt, intel and others. so massive respect to them. all the others walk on eggshells. maybe hardware unboxed but those 2 are always with bitter faces and BORING AF to listen to. the regular guy NEVER SMILES ONCE! the other new guy sounds like an AI robot just reading brochures. they both suck asz. 2cents is a clown. linus is a douche. not many decent ones.

influencers will never push back unless the train has already departed. Than when no ones looking, sign up for another sponsorship 6 months later.

The best way to keep influencers or reviewers accountable is simply stop looking at their content if you believe they're just a paid ad.

Monitors Unboxed and Digital Foundry are pretty much the only places on Youtube I still visit... honestly became the armpit of the internet.

Apart from an official trailer or something, I'm not about to ever click on some random YT video. Especially one that I have no idea where the *($#% it's going.

Can’t say I’m surprised. Maybe I am, because I assume this is SOP. We’ve heard of sites in the past that were refused review samples, and if that happens often enough, the site can’t stay in business.

Like/Dislike, move on. Very simple interaction and hard agree.
A video link with no description is not very inviting.
Naming things is like the 2nd hardest thing in tech. Took GM 2 tries.
From: They Tried to Control My Review… I Said No.
To: They Tried to CONTROL My Review!

He's a clickbaity pos but gets people excited about hardware, so I kinda empathize with that.
That's a very difficult job and I might do it. This hobby definitely needs way more super excite.
Either way, the influencer thing is a problem that masquerades as its own solution.
Might be time to give these types a badge and a .gov email. :pimp:

I have a hard time calling them influencers, as no one influences my purchasing decisions except for me.

Half of the guys on the toob are barely capable of running the hardware that they receive.

You no give the good review, you not get the good hardware.

Look at the way some of them manage their cables.. total noobs with no skill.

I don’t care for YT reviews anyway. They always lose me with that lead photo where the talking head is making a goofy face, and there’s usually an inflammatory title or literal flames drawn on something. That’s somewhere between evening news and an infomercial.

My favorite is when they are asking a question in the title. You’re supposed to think it’s a yes, but at the end, the answer is always no.

We live in a time when the information content of the internet in general has sunk to an extreme low (with product-related guidance at least). YouTube is one of the worst offenders, paying creators for clicks rather than quality of content. With this in mind, of course creators aim for clickbait. Angry faces attract attention.

In short, people have always been stupid, it's only amplified thousandfold by the internet. Welcome to the age of marketing and propaganda.

The only thing any self-respecting individual can do is look at diagrams, pure facts, and throw the "conclusion" part of any review in the trash where it belongs.

As a child of the 80s, we’ve long been treated to “lowest common denominator” content. Movies and tv shows had lots of shameless product placements, and celebrities and athletes endorsed things like shoes, soft drinks, and underwear. There’s always a market for fools gold, I’m afraid.

To be honest, as much of a Nascar fan I am, I'll never understand the power of advertising and sponsorships. Like, ok, the no.11 car has a big FedEx logo on it, but so what? It won't make me rely on FedEx's services any more or less.

The advertising worked!!!

See??

You're now talking about FedEx.

THAT is the power of advertising right there.

What good is talking about it if I'm not using it anyhow?

That's not the point.

What if a reader has never heard of FedEx until you just mentioned it?

THAT is the power of advertising.

Yep. Those hard dollars spent on a big logo across a car going around in circles worked. You might not use FedEx, but it did remind me I need to send a package and I'll probably use FedEx even it's a few dollars more because of convince being closer to my work.

Ah, I get 'ya. :)

Advertising largely just reminds you a product or service exists. If FedEx never advertised, you may not think much about them, but just having funny ads or having their brand visible might be just enough to get someone to chose their service over another. In some sense, this is good, because it makes these companies compete harder for your business, because one or two bad experiences can do far more damage than 100 funny ads or on-time deliveries.

And there is something to say about FedEx being the first company to come to mind when you brought it up. ;)

All true.

It also leads to a world where every web page is full of ads, and you can't watch a 5-minute video on YouTube without also watching 10 minutes of advertising unless you pay for premium - and even then, your content is sponsored by...

It reminds me of the movie Idiocracy a lot.

Did you 3 not read the title of the video?

Because -- even if you believe you're not influenced by that logo on the Nascar track -- when it comes time for you to ship something critical, or are asked by a coworker or friend to recommend a shipping service -- you say Fedex, not "Al's SuperShipping".

Did you not read the title of the video?
Believe it or not, manufacturers aren't required to supply random Youtubers with free product samples. If they believe a reviewer is being unfair, arbitrary, biased, or simply ignorantly misinformed, why should they spend time and money to assist them? Nothing stops a reviewer from shelling out their own cash for a review item, then reselling it when the review is complete.

A manufacturer not providing samples isn't the same as the manufacturer not allowing reviews of a product.
Nvidia knows the 5060Ti 8GB version is garbage, and that reviewers would be harsh on it, so didn't allow reviews of it. It's a lose lose for reviewers and consumers, but a win for Nvidia because people will still buy those cards anyway.
